I’ve caught big bluefin tuna in the gulf of St . Lawrence off PEI. All fish were giant over 500-900. And we were using 150# reels . With. Room stick type rods . Tony’s charters. Awesome trip

We were chunking school bluefin, and albacore on my buddys boat. Stand-up rods with 30wide Penns. One guy hooks a medium -turned out 460lbs -and is getting stripped QUICKLY. My buddy pulls out a bent-but 130, and clips it to the harness lug on the 30w. As soon as the fish let off for a second,he locked up the drag on the 30 and tossed the rod over the side. He worked the 130 from the rodholder, until the fish was exhausted. When the 30 reappeared,we grabbed it and cranked the fish to the surface. It was spent, and hot. We packed it in ice,and brought it into Montauk, but the core sample wasn't too good due to the long fight. If I remember correctly he only got 5 or 6 dollars a pound and it dressed out around 370lbs or so.

Keep your drag relatively loose. When the fish strikes grab the spool ( spincast ) and hold it tight as you set the hook. Once set use your hand to apply less pressure to the spool until you get the feel for the size of the fish. Once you get that feel either tighten or loosen the drag until you get a good bend in the rod and fight the fish. Always remember its usually better to have a loose drag rather than a tight one--unless of course your trying to keep the fish away from structure--then you need to tighten the drag.

My dad always had a small piece of leather with a short flap on the spool, rivetted around 1 crossbar of his penn conventional reels for putting his thumb on when the fish was running.

I learned how to fish with 1, a 1946 penn 155 he got when he got back from Germany. still have it, still works and cast like a rocket. No centri fugal brakes, no magnets, no bearings, worst drag in the world . on a 6 foot split bamboo pole.If you can cast with that, you won't understand all the whining about baitcasters birdnests !
