REVIEW: GENE LAREW 8-INCH TATTLETAIL WORM "JUNE BUG LITE."

Gene Larew has sold a 6-inch TattleTail Worm for a while now, but the 8-inch model came out in the spring. FLW Tour pro Andrew Upshaw has already won a T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) derby with it on Toledo Bend (with 30 pounds!), and it looks like a winner of a worm. Iโ€™ve had a few packs since late May, and Iโ€™m happy to confirm that they catch fish.

A Little Extra In The Tail;

The 8-inch TattleTail is fairly thick, about 3/8 inch, up at the head โ€“ a bit thicker than a Zoom Magnum Trick Worm โ€“ but it slims down to almost nothing at the tail. The tail is the same diameter for about an inch and a half and is tipped by a little boot, like on a swimbait, that is meant to give the bait extra action.

When you drop it in the water you see a very lively bait. It doesnโ€™t thump back to the boat like a swimbait, but the wispy tail certainly moves around a lot more than a thicker straight tail would.

A Versatile Tool;

Iโ€™ve mostly put the TattleTail to work on Kentucky Lake during ledge season, but it probably has a pile of other applications. Iโ€™ve used it with success on a Neko rig, wacky rig and drop-shot, and on a 3/4-ounce shaky head. Itโ€™s good for all those things. On a finesse rig the tail flutters enticingly, and I can only imagine it dances well when itโ€™s hopping around on a big chunk of lead.

Wide Gaps Work, But Not Necessary;

The shaky head Iโ€™ve used the most for the 8-inch TattleTail is the Nichols Lures Big Screwball Shakey Head. It has a 7/0 hook with a long shank, and it hooks and holds the bait well with a screw-lock keeper.

The hook on the Nichols head doesnโ€™t have a giant gap, but the TattleTail doesnโ€™t need a huge gap. Itโ€™s still a worm, after all.

If you wanted to drag it on a Texas rig, a 4/0 EWG would probably be the smallest youโ€™d want to go. Regardless, just because itโ€™s 8 inches long doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™ll need to re-build your entire tackle system around it. Itโ€™s in a sweet spot where most ledge-sized terminal tackle will work well with it.

I remember reading about these in Bassin magazine right before they hit the market had to be at least 10 years ago. They only had a couple colors available, Green Pumpkin, GP purple and Junebug light so I bought a couple bags of each.

I love the trick worm it will always one of the best "floating worm" style baits ever made, but the tattle tail is much more versatile. The TT is heavier so you can cast it easier with no weight. The TT has a flat head so you don't have to bite or cut anything off to thread it on a spring or put a neko weight in it. O rings fit on the TT much better then the trick worm.

IMO the TT is much better then the trick worm on a wacky rig. To me the only where the trick worm beats the TT hands down is as its intended role as a "floating worm," the pointed head allows it dart and swim much better, especially if you know to rig and fish them.

There are downsides with the TT, blue gill and perch can bite that tab right off the tail and they can kink in the bags but that's an inconvenience not a deal breaker. If you like to throw shakey heads, neko rigs or just worms in general give these a shot.

The 8 inch has turned into my favorite big shakey head worm. Big profile and really nice subtitle action. I use them on a 4/0 wide gap shakey head. Even 1 pounders will devour it.

Highly underrated worm. Both the 6" ad 8" have been good lures. Caught a personal best smallmouth on a 6" Brown/Magenta using a drop-shot. Was catching numbers on a Roboworm 4"ST, ran out, used the Gene Larew and caught the PB.

My #1 NEKO rig bait. Killer in pre-spawn with bass are still roaming.

Comments:

Great action & they catch fish, the only issue I've had is sunfish like to nibble the paddle tail off & once that's gone the bass don't eat it quite as well so you have to replace the bait. Other than that the flat top goes onto a shaky head great & they come in whatever color you may need.

Everybody on Lake Murray throws the Zoom Trick worm. It's a great bait, but I wanted to try something different so I bought some of these Tattletail Worms.

They arrived in good condition. I like the profile and the different style of tail. The flat head makes it easier to screw onto a shaky head. My buddy stuck with the Trick Worm while I threw the Tattletail. I out fished him 4 to 1. I'm buying more and part of my order is for my fishing buddy.

Comments:

Got a bag to try, and most of the little guys were all kinked up. This makes me angry. Also, one of the little paddles on the tail was gone. Not really cool. Has a little subtle action that will get bites but they need to put these suckers in a bigger bag.
