Spinning Reels On a Budget for $200 - $300

So I’m planning on getting a caster and spinning reel seeing as I’m getting more into fishing. I bought a cheap combo setup from Scheels this year and my reel is shot. So now I’ve looking online/on YouTube for some reels and poles for a Spinning setup in between 200 - $300 max any suggestions?

What do you fish for specifically? Is this freshwater, saltwater or both? What species are your primary target? This affects what reel and rod to buy if upgrading and becoming a more serious angler. Your budget allows for some very good set ups. The more info you provide the better the suggestions will be in a rod and reel. You want a rod and reel compatible with each other and the fish you target mainly.

My caster is going to be more geared towards bass/musky/pike. But my Spinner setup is basically gonna be used for all around things. Trout fishing/ Live Bait/ More finesse type fishing/ some bass too. I only fish in fresh water. I’m a beginner I should mention that also my friends just really started getting fishing this year and plan on fly fishing next year but it’s just something about spinning reels that I really like. I caught my first musky on a med/heavy spinning rod with 50 lb braided line and a chatter bait I was borrowing from a friend cause they all got casters. So yeah not the best set up lol

If you are targeting bass and pike a medium-heavy power rod for the baitcaster. It will handle an occasional musky hitting while fishing for the other fish. A spinning rod for bass and trout a medium light power is an option. It will handle most fish in the bass and trout size range. It will cast lighter lures and finesse bait better also.

The baitcaster reel you need a strong drag. Abu garcia Revo X have a lot of drag at a about 120 US. The Daiwa Tatula Ct reels will work for bass and pike but are a little light for musky. A Fuego is lower priced and comparable. Spinning reel look at Pflueger, Daiwa, and Shimanos for around 70. A 2000 or 2500 size will match the spinning rod.

In rods. Look at Fenwick HMG, Dobyns Fury, and St Croix Bass X rods for around 100-120. This will put you a bit over 300 but be good gear that will last and perform well. Other people will give you more options. You gave enough info for everyone to help you with good recommendations.

These are all good upgrades for entry level fisherman that will last for years. A medium light and medium heavy will cover lures from 1/8 to 1 1/2 ounce between the 2 rods. The spinning rod will be 1/8 to 3/8 or 1/2 ounce. The baitcast rod will go from 3/8 to 1 1/2 . Do not over look the lure ratings on rods. That tells you what weigh will cast best.

Look at the St. Croix Mojo rods - they're 150 and below, and you can buy a really nice Shimano spinning reel for right about the same price. Very nice set up, and you can go as big or as small as you like. 7 foot mojo yak medium light and a Shimano Nasci 3000 - about $250.

I am a convinced Shimano Reel fan. I don't know much if anything about what and where you intend to fish, but that would be my first inspection and cut. Just Sayin...RJS

Comments: I purchased a Stradic Ci4+ reel and ordered an extra spool from Shimano. It was an incorrect spool so I ordered the correct one and sent the incorrect back for a refund. Shimano has not and will not make a refund for the incorrect one even though they have clearly admitted they owe it. I used to be a loyal customer but I have purchased my last Shimano fishing product.

From: Mike: Pine Bluff 6/22/20

Comments: While I always wanted one of these, forking out the money was the issue. I finally ended up getting 2 Ci4's and 1 FK Stradic. It was early Christmas gifts to me! They are so awesome, smooth, and reliable! Paired up with a Curado rod, Lews Custom Speed Stick, and Veritas Rod. Tightlines!

From: Mike: Cumming, GA 1/15/20

Comments: Hands down my favorite coffee grinder reel. Super light weight, durable and buttery smooth drag. No problems with line twist either. The "2500 Size" is perfect for a "Drop Shot Rig", perfect balance on D.S. Rods to make for a super sensitive combo. Just wish they were a little less expensive, got to pay to get the good gear though.

From: Paul: Chula Vista, CA 1/11/20

Comments: This reel is very light, and I swear it balances perfect on any rod I put it on. I ended up purchasing the 2500 because I wanted the stronger drag, but now I want to get the 1000 for ultra-finesse techniques. This reel is a lot of fun to use on the water, and it's had no problem with fighting large bass. This is a great egg beater to buy!

From: Austin C: Texas 1/10/20

Comments: I have this on a Dobyn's Xtasy using 10lb Asegai and 6lb Tatsu. I'll admit I don't plan keeping this reel on this specific rod forever (it'll be replaced by an Exsence), but it is a great reel nonetheless and will go on another rod I own. Are there more smooth reels? Yes, but this reel is a top performer. I can bomb Ned Rigs and other light baits! It is very smooth on the cast and feels great. The weight is something else. I really enjoy how light it is, and it seems to balance well on everything you stick it on. For the price range, this reel cannot be beat. I recommend this to anyone who wants to start getting into the nicer gear. You won't regret it.

From: Ryan: 12/7/19

Comments: A while back I spontaneously purchased an St. Croix Legend Elite on sale for $150 at a local Dicks but I never liked using it. It always felt off balance when I paired it with any of the Stradic FI's I own. I tried pairing a 2500, 3000, and a 5000 and none where satisfactory. I found a deal on a 3000 Ci4 Stradic and paired it with the St. Croix rod and it now never sits at home. The combo is balanced and so light it's a pleasure to use.

From: Mike: Georgia 11/9/19

Comments: Order 3 for finesse bass fishing, took them out and i just fell in love. They cast so smooth and being 5.6 oz it handle my 2 pound bass like champ ....so if you thinking about getting one buy 2 or 3 you will not be disappointed

From: Unknown: 8/21/19

Comments: No doubt a nice reel,I got this reel in the 3000,very smooth lightweight. Only downside is that Shimano does not mention there is no anti/reverse switch,Thus being dependent on the drag,Who would not want to be able to use a anti/reverse switch. If u ever reeled your line in and it is short near the rod tip.you either have to open the bail up or strip drag off,not good, much more easy to flip anti/rev switch to put hook on the hook-keeper.

From: Mick: Jasper, GA 8/20/19

Comments: Had this reel for 2 years now .. There's a reason it's so popular . It's just an amazing reel - The quality is top notch . Pair it with a Zodias and you've one super pretty durable combo your fishing buddy's will envy . Don't settle for less or pay for more , it's not necessary.. Add this combo to your arsenal.. Will end up being a loved Coca Cola classic . - wink-

From: Dean: Las Vegas, 7/6/19

Comments: I had a old Stradic from the mid 80's still going strong.I got a St Croix Legend Elite but the old Stradic was to heavy threw the balance off.I just got my Ci4+ Wednesday, put it on the rod perfect balance. The reel is so smooth and feels so well made.really impressed by the Ci4+ 2500...

From: Stanley: Crumpler 6/22/19

Comments: When it comes to reels - I'm a die hard Shimano bait cast fan - and a Daiwa spinning fan. However - Wow! Shimano totally won this one in the Stradic - To many pros to list... Take care of it and it will last you a life time - One of the best egg beaters ever built - Highly recommend the Stradic - sorry Daiwa , they ( Shimano ) got you on this one .

From: Ross: Las Vegas, NV 6/15/19

Comments: I got this reel with "15 Pound Power Pro" on and paired it up with a St Croix Premier 6'6 medium to fish for everything and use in tournaments in the fall and spring. This by far my favorite reel I ever owned, it's light as a feather, cast a mile long, and the retrieve is smooth like butter. I went out to a local lake with huge bass in it and hooked into a 10+ Lb bass and bringing him in was so much fun on that setup until he spit the hook out right in front of me. Can't wait to go catch monster pike and walleye on this setup as well as that 10+ I lost.

From: Aidan, IL 6/14/19

Comments: This reel is greater than the sum of its parts. This reel shows you what Shimano can do! If you own but one spinning reel for bass fishing, this should be it. I prefer bait casters, but I love fishing with this thing. Smooth and powerful. Feathery light. The "2500 Size" is probably the baddest little spinning reel on the planet.

From: Shawn: Tampa 5/28/19

Comments: Using one of these reels makes me wish I switched to Shimano years ago. Used these in a nonstop rain all day and had no issues at all. So smooth.

From: Unknown - 4/17/19

Comments: Nicest $200+ reel on the market. Worth all the hype. Will flip the most loyal Abu, Lews, Daiwa, fan into a Shimano freak. Shimano!!!

From: Marvin - Kangawa, Japan 12/4/18

Comments: If you are looking for the lightest possible setup to pair with your G-Loomis IMX for Steelhead the search is over. I have guided winter Steelhead on the Olympic Peninsula for seven years and this has always been the reel of choice for myself and clients. This reel has brought in more trophy Steelhead than any other reel I know of due to its butter smooth drag system. If you have the fish of a lifetime on the hook you better hope your holding one of these.

From: Lael P. Johnson: Seattle 10/13/18

Comments: Hands down best all around spinning reel. I use this for inshore and freshwater fishing. You will not be disappointed.

From: Unknown - Texas 9/11/18

Comments: This reel is worth the money. Cant go wrong. best reel out-there. supper smooth and very durable. Just do a little maintenance as recommended and it will last you forever. You get what you pay for.

From: Unknown 8/25/18

Comments: Ill start off by saying I have tried many brands including Abu Garcia, Daiwa and shimano. I have the Stradic Ci4+ in the 3000 size. Its a very good reel, solid build, smooth. however, I don't think it compares to my Daiwa ballistic or even Tatula lt in anywhere across the board. Both the Tatula and ballistic are lighter and smoother. As for drag id say they are about the same. Solid reel, but for the price I would have to give it to Daiwa. I will say I like the bail on the Stradic more and overall it blows my Revo Stx out of the water. Save $40 and get a Tatula, id even put it above my ballistics. Either way you cant go wrong the Stradic Ci4+ is a great reel, just my two cents.

From: Unknown 8/10/18

Comments: This is one of the best reels I own, super light and smooth and a very incredible drag. "I own one in a "2500 Size and two in the 3000 Size." Absolute hands down worth every dollar !

From: Vinny - Florida 9/5/18

Comments: I have 5 of the Ci4+ 4000, I fish saltwater only throwing thousands of times a 7/8 oz Super Spook with 10# suffix 832. I have no line twist issues and have never done more than just rinse my reel off after a day of fishing. All of my reels are just as smooth as the day I bought them, which is smooooooth!!!

From: Unknown: McQueeney, TX 4/25/18

Comments: This reel is an experience. from the moment you handle the reel you're first impression is obviously its weight- Supidly light. but for some reason you never doubt its durability because it feels so solid. then you flip the bail and feel it snap solidly into place so satisfying. then you turn the handle.. and keep turning. this type of inspiration makes this reel priceless. no one buys this reel and regrets it. there's only one thing better than a Stradic Ci4+ and thats why i have two of them. the 1000 and 2500 since you asked. easily my favorite piece of equipment.

From: jp: Ontario, CA 3/22/18

Comments: Hands down best spinning reel I've ever cast. Silky smooth and handles fish with ease. Get one you will not be disappointed.

From: Gerardo: Idaho 12/31/17

Comments: I love this reel it is light and fast so I can catch up to a Small-mouth Bass running to me.

From: Evan 10/27/17

Comments: Is this reel a little more expensive than a lot of other spinning reels? Yes. But are you getting what you pay for? Yes and no doubt. I have owned many spinning reels varying from all different brands. After using Shimano for years, I would put the Shimano Stradic up against any spinning reel in the market. It is so light, the drag is butter smooth, and the durability is incredible. I have done nothing but simple clean and oil, and this reel is as good as day 1. I will always save the extra money and go with a Shimano Stradic. Tight Lines.

From: Unknown: 7/11/17

Comments: Just got the 2500 version of this reel and wow- it's amazing. I thought, my Symetre 3000 is smooth and light, how better could it get. Let me tell you- LOTS better. Understandably this reel costs double, so it should perform better and it delivers. I've found myself grabbing this setup over my bait casters (Curados) due to the sheer joy of using the Stradic. I've got it paired with an Avid X MLXF and what a combo. No regrets spending the $.

From: Skot 6/13/17

Comments: Best spinning reel you can buy..for the money. Light, POWERFUL, and pretty slick looking. I'm a Pflueger fan when it comes to spinning reels but I couldn't resist grabbing a Ci4+FB for occasional saltwater. Glad I did. I find myself grabbing this reel for bass fishing now too. It lays the line much slower concerning the up and down of the spool movement and is noticeable when casting. I always thought all spinning reels cast the same but this one is special. Spend the dough and get the best...minus the Stella.

From: Unknown 6/10/17

Comments: I've got last years and this model in the 2500. All I can say is these are by far the best spinning reels I've owned. I was a huge Daiwa fan for the longest until I tried the Lexa out and had issues with the bail with two separate reels. I then made the change to the 2500 Ci4+ and haven't looked back since. The reels are super smooth and the drag is amazing. What I like the most is these reels are pretty much maintenance free. If you take care of your reels it will last a lifetime. I've caught mega Smallies all the way to Redfish and have had no issues whatsoever after 3 years with the older model and one year with the new one..

From: Brizzle: TN. 5/22/17

Comments: I just bought this in Florida did a little saltwater fishing and could immediately tell this was a great reel it handled very well and was incredibly smooth. Definitely recommend it.

From: Dylan: Chicago 4/11/17

Comments: Same as the guy before me. I could definitely tell the difference between this reel and the old model. Smoother, lighter, easier rotation start-up. A little spend your but you definitely get what you pay for. Have this beauty spooled up with 20lb PowerPro Maxcuatro braid and then connected to 8lb sunline super fc. Have been slaying the Smallies on the Mississippi with this setup. This paired with a Loomis GL2 worm/jig rods a amazing combo for slinging wobble head rigged craws.

From: Lex: Minnesota 2/25/17

Comments: From the moment I picked up this reel, I could tell the difference between this one and the previous model. This reel is ultra smooth and lightweight. Drag is magnificent, second to none. Pick yourself up one, you won't disappoint.

The Stradic is a terrific reel if you don't mind spending 200 bucks or so. I have three of em. You'll never need to replace one. Shimano makes more expensive ones, but i don't know how they can be a whole lot better. The Stella goes for around 750 - that's why I own three Stradics.
