How do you keep pickerel alive long enough for a weigh and photo without it dying?

I caught a 3.75 pickerel, which I learned later is a decade old fish and close to maximum size and when I released it it died! I had no choice but to eat it. But I don’t know what I can do in the future.

Yeah I don't think weighing and taking a photo should take more than a minute? You can help the process along by having a net and lip grippers at the ready so you can easily land the fish and hold it without fumbling it at the side of the boat while trying to dodge the teeth.

Ok? Regardless of where you're fishing you should have the proper equipment to handle the fish you intend to catch.

those fish, ala muskies, northerns and the like really stress out the most from being caught so being put back without delay is the greater due to size, the bigger the fish, the least time one should take messing with it.
