Help selecting a nymphing indicator

So I do t want to dedicate a reel to nymphing so indicator line isnt for me. My question is whether I should use an indicator leader or indicator tippet? I'm not going to make my own because I would make a mess of it. For reusability I was thinking 3x indicator tipped with a tippet ring on one end and a loop knot on the other. I could remove and reuse. Is this the preferred setup or is there a reason to use an indicator leader or other setup?

Need some more details.

What current set up are you using for your 'other' fishing before you're trying to switch to a nymphing set up?

I guess my best answer would be all around? I am nymphing mostly. Usually I use a drop fly, with weighted nymphs. Depending on scenario I'll use and airlock foam indicator or without indicator. But I'd like the option to throw on a regular leader and dries during a rise or a streamer if I see an aggressive trout in a pool.

How about a new zealand yarn indicator? Those are all I use now

Do they stay put? That's my only concern with the low profile indicators. I tend to just use the stick and but then I lose the adjustability.

Yeah they work well, and can be easily adjusted.

You just need to learn the right amount of yarn to use so there's not too little or too much.

I use the Lightning Strike indicators in white or natural colors. Incredibly sensitive, and you put floatant on them once and they’ll stay up forever

Most people fly fishing for trout use the same leader for dry fly fishing and nymphing. So in my opinion, I'd find an indicator size that works well for both, and then just tippet to extend it's life.

For example, 5x indicator to ~12 inches of 5x tippet to top fly (be it dry or nymph), and then another ~6-10 inches of 6x tippet to your second fly. If you're nymphing you can put the weight on above the know connecting the tippet.

Then, if you want to switch over to dry fly fishing for a hatch simply cut off the rig at the indicator to tippet know, which preseveres your indicator, and re-rig.

Why not use a dry-dropper rig?

Some of the streams I fish only one hook is allowed. Thus a hopper and small nymph would be out of the question. How areas where we can use two hooks in a tandem action this would be great.

I believe that the “indicator” tippet you are referring to is for Euronymphing. For a strike indicator, I use a .05$ corky and peg it with a round toothpick. I bought 100 rainbow corkies about 10 years ago, and am still standing strong in the bobber category.
