I spooled up a reel with straight braid. When I reel in, it looks like it’s not spinning. Anyone ever have this happen? I’m assuming what’s happening is the braid is slipping since I didn’t put backing or tape to hold it. Am I right?

That can be an issue. My friend taught me to put on a layer of mono backing before spooling up to ensure slipping doesn't occur. Connect lines with a Double Uni Knot

That’s what I was thinking. I’m 99% sure that’s what’s happening because it’s a brand new reel

Yep! You can confirm it by checking is the spool itself is spinning when you reel.

Yep braid is spinning on the spool. Either back with mono or put some electrical tape on the spool

Yup that's it! No shame I've done it.

For any casting reel with holes in the arbor, just run your line in one hole and out another, and tie to the arbor. No wasted mono or nasty tape/adhesive all over the place.
On my open faced reels I wrap the line 3 times around the spool before tying the line on. that way it doesn't slip. Make sure the wraps are tight on the spool when you tie the knots. Add drag to the line when you load the Spool also.
yes its slipping .just throw it away and get a new rod and reel.
this way you will have brand new fishing equipment. we all like new stuff right. and your wife dosent say you have too many so put in the garbage and let her see you do it. she will feel bad for you and want you to replace it. but before the trash man comes jack that old rod out of the trash and slip it back with other rods . its atwo for one deal. works everytime
Sounds like Cubsfan is truly the eternal optimist. 😉
Braid is famous for slipping on the spool. I spooled up some, for a worm setup, had the strike, and set the hook, the fish ran, maybe ten feet and spit the bait out. The hook never even passed thru the worm. The drag was tight when I pulled on the line, but not enough. I took the line off, put electrical tape on the spool, and all was good.
I crazy glue my line to the spool. It works fantastic. It’s really cool to see the bottom
Of the spool and you know it’s not coming off . For my big reels I like to use 5200.this is the best way to secure your line to your 80 wide reels. A tuna can’t pull the line off.

Just tie your line on the spool than make a twist in the line and put that loop on the spool. Make another twist and put that over the spool in the opposite direction. Guaranteed not to slip. I have used this for years with braid.
