what do you spool them with?

I dunno if I'd call them conventionals. The hallmark of a conventional is the manual clutch. Calcuttas and Ambassadeurs are automatic. Another key difference is conventionals typically use grease on the bearings instead of oil since they are used more so for trolling.

I am no expert, just have had a lot of experience so Shimano reels have been by far the best I've ever owned! Just Sayin...RJS

Just curious where is this boat going to be located and what’s his main target fish, trolling or bottom fishing , I spoil mine with braid and then mono for shock I outfitted my boat with 7 avet raptor sx with 20 to 50 class 5 ft 6 stand up rods the reels have 14 lbs on strike and 26 on full worked great for me I purchased all at same time from a store in Miami they shipped for free and gave me 20% off total bill
What kind of fishing will he be doing? Go with Penn. Shimano and Ambassadeur are great but I’m afraid they won’t take the abuse. Penn reels can take it.
Penn reels in my experience
I agree Penn reels for salt. Several durable and affordable models.
