Can anyone out there point me to a reliable and concise report on when to use which weight and length of rod? My wife is having trouble casting beyond a few yards. I think her rod is too light and too short but I want more input before i make a purchase.
Thx
Best to start with an open face spinning rod / reel. Bait caster is better once a person has gotten well practiced but not to start with. To heavy of mainline will also make it very hard to cast. Should only need 6 or 8 lb mainline for most fish for starters

What type rod are you using

It could very well be her lack of proper technique. Watch some videos.
Would help us help you if we knew what kinda rod and reel she's got. Spinning or casting? And how long is the rod? And what type and size line? And what's she trying to cast? All of that matters. That said, if the rod and the line and the weight match up properly, you will maximize the length of your casts. And having said that, the longer the rod, the longer the cast (generally speaking).
Heck yeah... what spirit said. Absolutely. Gotta do it that way. 👍🏻
You won't cast far with a stiff club of a rod unless you use a ton of weight then that causes a whole host of problems. Tell us what she is using and the rod length and rating and the reel.
Best for her would be a medium action spinning rod and a medium priced spinning reel. Don't know what you are fishing for but a light line is a good started about a 5 lb test mono
Thanks guys for your replies. However, the point of my inquiry might not have been clear. What I really want know is, in general, what fishing applications are best supported by which rod/reel combo parameters. For instance, do I want a really sensitive rod for panfishing on a lake? ML for trout? M for bass? H for catfish? Looking for a published article that would make those kinds of recommendations.
Jake, thank you. I’ll check it out tomorrow after church.
