Eating while I fish.

I used to fish a lot when I went on kayaking trips in scouts, and ate a lot of what I caught. That was some time ago, and I dont really know the restrictions on doing so now. Say I was fishing off the bank of a river, would it be ok for me to have a fire going and eating the fish throughout the day? I know certain fish you have to put back in the water and all that, but google only gives me articles on not eating fish from polluted water and endangered species. Not on the limits of what I can do. I'm in Texas if that helps.

Look up: “Texas dnr fishing regulations”

Whether you can make a fire or not depends on the area, almost all public parks you cannot make fires outside of designated areas. If you are a little more away from civilization though I doubt you’ll run into issues having a safely maintained fire.

In addition to that- you probably want to find out if there are any regulations against possessing cleaner fish. Some states say all fish need to be intact - pretty much so wardens can measure them if needed.

Building upon the previous post, download the "DNR Compass App" for Texas it's(I believe) the Outdoor Annual ( https://tpwd.texas.gov/business/licenses/online_sales/ ) - scroll down to select your device and download from google/itunes

The app will let you buy/update fishing/hunting licenses, help you identify fish, and has GPS functionality to let you know about advisories, regulations, restrictions and put/take, creel limits, and more

Plus, it generates a QR code for a game warden to scan off your phone if they need to confirm your license for creel limits or anything else.

It even has a section to report invasive species, poaching and other stuff.

And it's a free app.

A little soy, a little wasabi, good sharp knife. Problem solved. Sashimi.

Ponzu instead of soy is much tastier I think - I love the one with the chile.

You were destroying and eating the evidence. It’s probably a gray area to eat fish right as you catch them. Your probably still only allowed your daily limit. Size and number. If you were teaching scouts to fish and eat you probably would not of gotten harassed but still probably a gray area.

Seems to me there are certain species with no size or creel limits, and I’m sure that varies in different areas. For example, here in Maine there are no such limits on yellow perch. So, I could ostensibly catch as many as I want all morning and have a nice shore lunch. Of course, with other gamefish - bass, trout, landlocked salmon - that would be a definite no no.

Here I believe the freshwater requirements are the same as saltwater, if you filet a fish while on the water (or bank)keep the "rack ". Of course that only applies to fish with a min./max. length limit, or a creel limit. Check with town hall wherever you're fishing, about having an open fire. Here most only allow in a fire pit, grill,or campfire.
