Bass fishing: Bigger fish snap my line

Lately I’ve been fishing from my dock using live worm bait to catch some bass. On a handful of occasions, I catch a beefy boi. The struggle is once I reel it all the way to the dock the line tends to snap! I am currently using 6 lb test line and was wondering if upgrading to 8 or 10 lb would be good/bad idea?

6lb is definitely light line, if they're breaking you off then your drag might be too tight. If they're breaking off when you try to lift them out of the water, you could get a net, instead. Will make landing them much easier and it's a little better for larger fish.

A net will definitely help with that.

Are you just tying a bunch of overhand knots? What type of knot are you using? That could be it.

Adjust your drag, play the fish out and don't try to lift the fish with the line. 8 or 10 lb test is fine for bass also. You could also get into braided line which gives you around 50 lb test at the same diameter as 10lb monofilament.

How old is your line? switch to 8lb and make sure your drag is not super tight. Depending on how high dock is a net would be a good investment just to make sure. I used to make mistakes with my drag all the time when I would catch a big one. One time I had a monster she snapped off because my drag wasn’t loose enough when she took off under the boat. I will remember that day for the rest of my life I was crank baiting in the summer with a dt12 Rapala, underneath a bunch of drift wood. Sucks loosing fish and not knowing what could of been.

Make sure you don't have abrasions in your rod eyelet's. Could be nicking your line.

I heartily agree with you on braided line. I have been using Stren brand for years it doesn't stretch out or fray and I never have lines break even when lifting heavy fish up a ways so I can reach down and net them. I once fished from a bridge and lifted a 4 # catfish straight up about 10 ft before I could net it. That line held! Think I used 10 # test and an indestructible rod.
Have fun out there!
