Stay out of the locals’ way! Be prepared to stand and watch. After a few days someone will approach you and ask you some questions. Your answers will determine if you get accepted into the local clique. That’s the way it works.
What are you fishing for ???

I’m not from there but have fished piers before. I’ve always done best at night if it’s lighted. If not bring a lantern and lower it down above the water. 5 or six feet above the water. Have some live or dead shrimp or minnows. Have a rod rigged with a popping cork for the bait and a rod with a bottom rig for the same bait. If you have another rod set it up with artificial. Also bring a circular crab net you can lower down to guide any fish into the net to help you get the fish up to the pier. Most importantly, get there early. Good luck.

I'm not so sure about that, it depends. This time of year depending on your location.
The tourist staying for a weekend or a week. Then people who drive hear just to fish
for the day sometimes out number us.
I've never seen any of us turn anybody away that asked us for advice. What's the old
saying, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Plus he could walk into any Bait &
Tackle shop for advice. But as one mentioned, what was he looking to catch.

I never mind if people talk to me while I'm fishing.
Actually I enjoy it.
I counted them today just for fun...I have 21 fishing licenses from different states and 3 countries.. Don't step aside for any locals... Be courteous and respective .... I have found you can classify locals into 2 catagories..
A. always helpful especially to a new comers with quick help on what to do and don't..Many will give you there spot if it is productive ..just don't be greedy. B. class "A" jerks who think this is their pier or lake or stream or streach of beach.. they make up silly rules and don't mind telling you what they are..all in the name running you off..Stand your ground.. Remember these are public waters !!
In a nutshell: small circle hooks, FishBites, and peel the shrimp's shell. The fish are at the bottom.
Piers can get pretty local but if you just watch what they're doing and ask a few questions most will be willing to steer you in the right direction.
Dont crowd them. Dont cast over their lines. Dont throw a 6oz sinker out if everybody else is free lining or throwing lures. Dont just throw a line in,set your rod down and walk away while your line drifts 8 people down from you etc..
Mostly common sense and courtesy will get you all the help you need.
Pay attention. It's a big help.
Good luck. I think you'll ha e an easier time on a daytona pier than you would further south like palm beach, dania etc...

I just started saltwater/pier fishing this year and this is the best advice I've seen for a newbie. The only thing I'd add is that it sometimes takes a 3oz. or even a 4 oz. pyramid sinker to keep your rig in front of you and not tangled with your neighbor from moving with the current. It wont guarantee against a tangle but it will go a long way in preventing you from being the culprit.

Good Morning Mr. Larry :)
We enjoy it also, we kind of look at it as a social sport. We have met some very nice &
interesting people. Not not mention a few that had other intentions.
Z&B :)
