Absolute beginners guide...

Hi all, my 8 year old wants to start fishing. I've done a very small amount of carp fishing back in the day but normally on a rod set up by someone else.

Does anyone have any guides to setting up rigs; what knots to choose, what hooks for what fish, what fishing methods work best for what fish? What baits?

We've got a local turning circle on the canal near by, with bass, pike and roach in.

Just a little lost with it all! So much to take it!

Appreciate any help and your patience!

I wish i could help more but my english is not the best. The best rod set up for decent fish is 0.15mm or 0.12mm braid line and 5-20 gram rod. And the reel needs to be a good size combared to your rod. Now for lures if u want predatory fish u should use jigs. U can find jigs pretty much from every fishing store. Uniknot and palomar knot are really good. You can go with just a jig head and the jig but drobshot is good if the waters have a lot of crap at the bottom. Ypu can google all those things pretty easily. Its nice to see you help him learn to fish. Im 16 and had to learn everything from scratch when i was 6. I will salute for new fishermanlets. See ya.

I have never been fishing with braid line but a lot of anglers seem to agree that monofilament is easier to use and therefore better to get started.

For an 8 year old? There are plenty of YouTube videos out there and “How to’s.” But my suggestions - You’ll wanna use live bait for a kid. (Worms, minnows, etc) In general, bigger the bait the bigger the fish. Closed faced rods are the EASTIEST to use, just buy a combo pre spooled with line. Get a little thing of split shot weights, hooks, pliers, maybe some bobbers) Tie on the hook (fisherman’s knot is the easiest) > clip a split shot 2ish feet up> maybe add a bobber another foot or so up > Put on some bait > cast it into a deep spot or where you see fish > wait.

This is good advice. I'd recommend buying a worm threader. It looks like a big needle, because it is. The worm goes on the needle then the hook point goes in the needle hole and you slide the worm over the hook and onto the line. It makes a perfect rigged worm every time and your worms last longer and catch more fish. Less worm guts on your hands.

5Toofus: I regret to contradict others on this subject, but i do not believe in giving even an 8 year old a
"Mickey Mouse" closed face reel. Since he does not know how to use any type, there no reason not just start with an Ugly stick and spinning reel combo. Most Big Box stores like Walmart and Bass Pro Shops will have an assortment of reasonably priced rigs.

And as for bait, I agree in using live bait, such as earth worms and minnows if you can find them. Just Sayin..RJS
