Hey, i have just recently gotten into jigging, and i have only been using a spinning reel and have thought about getting a baitcaster. Can anyone explain to me the benefits of having a baitcaster and if its worth the price tag? Thanks!

A conventional gives you much more fighting power and control over the jig. The spinning will allow you to jig faster and is much more user friendly. My jigging spinning reels cost more than my conventionals. Conventional tops out at around 800 but spinning goes well beyond 1000. It really depends on your jigging style.

I jig with a narrow 2 speed conventional. I was told by a local shop owner that jigging is hard on spinning reels and prematurely wears them out, but I have no first-hand experience with that.

I can tell you this: I do like having two speeds. I do all my jigging in high gear, and there’s been a couple times with bigger tuna and an african pompano where I’ve had to use the low gear.

I think what matters more is that you have a quality reel to jig with, then choose what is most comfortable to you.

Hoss: If jigging is all you plan to do, the stick with what is comfortable. Bait Casting, in my opinion allows for more accuratly targeting of one's cast, If you are fishing in the ocean or gulf, that may not be necessary. Just Sayin...'RJS
