Hi everyone. I’m Harry and Im here in garlic country. Gilroy N. CA. I’m looking for advice on lures for catching bass and bait for Catfish. There are a lot of small
lakes around here to fish from. I’ve been a trout fisherman for 90% of my life but the lakes here are too shallow to support many trout. I have decided to try something different but I have almost zero experience. Any advice would be helpful. Also I fish for fun so it’s catch.... take a picture and release.

HarryDude; Well, Hoss, the bait part is easy, the catching is a little harder at first. I would say for the bass, you might start out with a Texas rig and a big black or purple plastic worm. You don't have to spend much money to have this kind of setup and it works as well as anything else.

For catfish, well, they eat about anything. Since you are in CA and I think using live perch is illegal, you might try minnows. Earth worms are a natural, and some folks use chicken parts. Just Sayin...RJS

I fish for bass regularly. Different times of the day. I have a bass boat but also shore fish. I use these 3 lures in the early morning or at dusk. In the background hanging upside down is a deeper diving shad lure I use on the boat. A white spinner - slow retrieve
Hula popper - let it hit the water and watch it - if it hits the water and a bass is there, they hit it right away - if not - wait 3 - 4 seconds and then give it a medium jerk and wait. Repeat jerks and hold on. Use along the shore line, at tree trunks out of water, reeds and anything else where they hang out. It floats so you can see it. Last is a jitterbug, fish it the same way except the jerks - it floats - so use a slow retrieve. It wiggles on top and they jump on it.
Also, I agree with RJS about the Texas rig and worms.
I don’t fish for cats yet - their claws are sharp !
I will have to send the pic in a moment

Hello,, I use to live in Salinas and my buddy's fished coyote lake and got big ones but I use to use hoola popers to but I now use wapper plopper it is my best lure for top water I have caught 40 bass in 4 hrs but that is Shasta lake low light hours am pm . If you get a strike and he will not hit on next cast throw a black or purple worm at the spot always use cradad sent you do not have to set hook to fast but when you do do it hard.Sanatoneo lake is my home lake I got a lake record cat there 35 lbs plus for cats whole shad or anchovies also the best cat fishing is Jan.Feb.in the creeks I use to use my old bait and crush it in a coffie can and mix with clay balls to throw in the stream so to get them to come in you get one bass on top water you will be done with trout lol
