How to find what species to look for?

I’m in central New Jersey, by the shore, and I’m really excited to start fishing again this summer.

So excited that I’m trying to find a way to fish now so i don’t have to wait. However i don’t know what’s in my area, and what’s active this time of year.

I’ve tried Fishbrain but my area doesn’t have a lot of activity, and i don’t want to buy the pro version. Is it too early to start bass fishing? If not I’ll go to Walmart and renew my freshwater license tomorrow and go out to the lake.

It's never too early. Just gotta switch up your tactics. Bass don't tend to be as aggressive in the colder water temps.

I’m still a relative beginner with freshwater, what kind of approach would you recommend taking? I would think bait over lures right?

My favorite method is slowly dragging a lizard (fake) over the bass nest or anywhere I think they might be. SLOOOWW

Wait for the warmest part of the day, stick to structures like docks or rock structure. A good method is to jig soft plastics and move them slowly around these structures. You could use jigging spoons as well. Just go out and have fun and see what works for you.
