I would be interested in the experiences of others with the use of thumping for raising fish attention and increasing catch rate. Since I am a writer, i would appreciate and statistics of increasing catch rates when using thumping. I just built an electric thumper and will start collecting data myself soon.

I never heard of this technique. Is it common in certain areas? Is it legal? When, where, and how is it used? Give me a short briefing - I'm curious.

Thumping is the practice of pounding on the bottom of the boat in a repetitive manner with a wooden rod like a baseball bat. Supposedly Striper, hybrid and bass anglers are using this technique to bring deep water fish closer to the surface and easier to catch. Lately some guys have built electric thumpers and they swear by them indicating that they can see the fish rise on their sonar when the thumping starts. Of course they have to find the fish first. I know a few guides that are using thumpers and say that they are catching a lot more fish when they use the technique. I decided to build one and find out for my self. There are several u tube videos that show guys using thumping and catching tons of fish. As I get more data I'll keep reporting it but i need inputs frm other guys that are usng it.

many years ago a guy I talked to said he used a thrumming motor to bring stripers to the top of the lake at Santee-cooper. The "thrumming" sound is to mimic large schools of shad swimming near the surface. I asked how he built one and he replied that basically its a small outboard with a severely out of balance prop blades. I never tried that method.

I built an electric unit a week ago and I have run it several times. I have done well catching fish so I can say that it doesn't scare the fish away but not enough data yet to know if it actually brings the fish up in the water from deeper depths like they say it does.
