Looking to get a new rod and reel combo for my son for his birthday in a couple weeks. I’d love something that he could use for many years but won’t overwhelm him now. Any suggestions I should look at? (I enjoy fishing but know very little about gear).

I’d suggest what I learned on. I learned using a Zebco33 on a med.light 6’ rod.

I would agree with that combo but if the child is small I would try to get a 4.5-5' at first but for sure stay away from those pink princess snoopy, or any of those type rod and reel combo they are as cheap as they look get them the real deal just small and simple enough for them to use. get them hooked and then they can spend all their hard saved money on the good stuff latter on. you know what they say "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he won't have money for bread the rest of his life"

I have kids fish my pond every week or so and when I provide rods it is a Zebco push button for kids under 5 and a Daiwa combo spinning reel for those 6 and older. Most do very well in a few minutes as long as you can get them to leave a foot or two line out from the tip to they can release the bail.

My youngest grandson started fishing with one of those little spincast combos when he was 4. At 6 he moved up to a spinning rod or and reel combo. I was using plastic worms shortly after I got him that combo and he wanted to try using plastic worms too. I was hesitant on letting him use them but let him try. I told him how to use them and was showing him how to use them and he caught 5 bass by himself. Remember, he was only six! He is 11 now and wanted to get a cheap baitcaster so I paid the difference to get him an Abu Garcia Silver Max. Two or three weeks ago he brought it to me with a birds nest. I showed him how to get it out and off he went. My son called me the other day and said he was going to get another one. Guess he has seen me with 2-4 rod n reels fishing and thought he needed another baitcast combo. My son doesn’t like to fish it has been fishing with me because his son is dragging him along, which is really cool! Maybe he will finally start liking liking to fish.

I also told him to take two rods with him. If he gets a bad birds nest, he will still have a rod to continue fishing with.

Little Johnny , started with a a cane pole ,with a great big set of nuts on it . 50 wide electric reel and the rod was as big around as his daddy’s tallywacker . With stainless steel rolling guides .he rigged it huge night crawlers . But when fishing got slow , little Johnny always carried a 1/4 stick of dynamite in his pocket so that he could keep it real. Yeah little Johnny sure loved fishing .

That’s funny you mentioned little Johnny. My little grandson’s name is John and I could see him doing something like that.

I agree completely with those who suggest a Zebco Model 33. In fact, that is exactly what my 7 year old grandson is using now. I’ve been using spinning reels for maybe a half-century and use them now almost everyday. I can still mess up with them and sometimes go back to a spincast - a vintage Garcia Abumatic 170. (I get more birds nests using braid in my spinning reels than mono. What am I doing wrong?)

I have been using braid on my spinning reels for 2 years and have never had a backlash on them. If you put too much line on a spinning reel it can cause problems. I have 15 pound braid with a 20 foot 6 pound fluorocarbon leader. Went out yesterday and caught 6 LM bass, none more than a pound (new pond). Got one hung up in the weeds and managed to get it out without breaking off. All on plastic worm without a sinker, no problems. I used some spider wire Eazy Braid and didn’t like it, I switched to Power Pro, works a lot better, doesn’t fray.

I haven’t had backlashes. Instead, sometimes line will come off the reel in a knotted snarl. It’s happening less and less, though, which tells me my technique has something to do with it. There’s always something new we can learn, isn’t there? Anyway, that doesn’t happen to my grandson using the Zebco!

I really thenk Zebco is really the best for a young lad to start very inexpensive and hardy little set for beginners who knows he may not like fishing.
