One guideline is to set the drag tight enough to permit reeling in the fish and loose enough to let the fish run if it is a big fish. Tighten the drag tight and pull on the line until the rod tip bend to about 90 degrees and at that point the line should release. This works fine for a medium rod. I would rather have the drag a little loose so the bigger fish can run and tire themselves. If you are reeling like mad and the fish is not coming in, the drag is too loose. It's dangerous to tighten a drag when hauling in a fish, that sometimes makes the fish pull harder and sometimes breaks it off.
