FYI. I was just curious as to how it got the name. I bet the first guy to ever meet one wished he hadn’t.

The name "man o' war" comes from the man-of-war, an 18th-century sailing warship, and the cnidarian 's resemblance to the Portuguese version at full sail.

I’ve seen a ‘Man O War in the ocean. They really do use that sail to move around.

Gotta watch those guys. Some of the biggest ones can have tentacles 30 feet long. We don't get too many of them in Delaware, they're more common to the south.

Yeah, they travel the warmer waters, though the gulf stream brings them up this way late summer.

We used to see a ton of jellyfish in the Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area and the Panhandle of Fl. area but not so many in the So. TX. area. It's warmer down there but we don't see many in the So. Padre Island area, nor did we in Port Aransas, TX.

We have already had some wash up on our beaches. Strong east wind washes them from the gulf stream to shore.

When I was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea I got stung by one. I had welts from my right shoulder down to my left hip. Not fun.

Funny that you mention So. Padre...flash back to spring break 1971.
Kansas 17yr old, bored, being on vacation with parents and wanting to smoke a cigarette, takes a walk down the beach from our condo. Sees all these weird pinkish bubble things washed up on shore. Examined them, seem to be dead, wondering if they will "pop".....they do. Finish the cig and start jogging back to the condo...canvas shoes, no socks.... get the childish idea to pop one with each stride. "Pop" about 20-30 by the time I reach the condo.... what is that stinging around my ankles ?
By the time I get to the steps of the condo, can hardly bear the pain, welts forming, halfway up to my knees.
It is then that my Father informs me of my stupidity and then further informs me of the "cure"..... gathering the family to procure the necessary "liquid salve" to ease my pain..."you want me to do WHAT ? Put my legs in THAT ?"
It worked, I learned, .....and I have to live with the shame each time someone remembers to tell the tale.... about why you shouldn't smoke cigarettes !
