So recently i’ve gotten pretty good at catching tilapia (i’ve only posted one of the small ones i’ve caught but i have had plenty of bigger catches). This is all done in a freshwater pond near my house. Anyways, i’ve recently had the idea of filleting and eating one. What do you guys think about that? will it be safe? any tips or tricks i should know about?

update: this is in a residential area with houses bordering one side of the pond, and i’m almost certain they spray some type of chemicals on the lawns. Thank you to everyone who reminded me of this, i almost ate some Chernobyl tilapia.

Do they spray the ponds or the grass near the ponds? Because if not I don't see any reason why they wouldn't be safe to eat.

It's often said that you shouldn't eat tilapia in general because they will eat odd things like bird poop that fall into the water, but then again so will most panfish species so I don't see the big deal.

In that case I think it would be best to avoid eating them.

I once filleted some tilapia I caught in a residential area pond and they were so contaminated by chemicals that their flesh was actually discolored and appeared greenish in color.

For a tilapia of any kind, you need to be especially carefull when filleting them. Tilapia have sensitive, thin bellies, something to keep in mind when filleting tilapia. In my opinion, i would cook them whole to minimize the risk of puncturing organs

I fileted hundreds of tilapia, despite their thick scales, they're actually one of the easiest fish to filet once you get the technique down.

Do not try to cut through the ribs. You can very easily filet them right around the ribs with out ever even puncturing or getting near the guts. Have you ever cooked one whole??? I certainly would not do that, their guts are disgusting, you do not want that mixing with the meat

What state? They should be fine as long as the water is relatively clean and their aren't pesticide/fertilizer sprayed lawns surrounding the pond

For science's sake, You could totally get away with it once with no ill effects, but I wouldn't start eating them on the regular
