I've been getting back into night fishing recently and have run into the problem of gut hooking fish mainly Bullhead catfish with night crawler fished on the bottom. I remember having this problem as a kid but never this bad. Any tips or techniques for avoiding gut hooking?

I cut barbs to make it easier to remove, but that’s just how they pull.
