I used to frequent a bar that was on the banks of the Peekskill Hollow which flowed directly into the Hudson River.
This was the kinda bar that was all natural wood inside, extremely dark from years of cigarette smoke, and chilled the tap beer by running the copper line for the tap through the cold water of the stream. On the bar was beef jerky, pepperoni sticks, pickled eggs, and salted minnows. Some of the snacks on the bar looked like they’d been on the bar for ages. Well, those salted minnows, originally meant for human consumption looked like they were there for 40 years at least. After a few beers one night I just had to ask about those salted minnows.
Well one of the patrons that lived on the river upstream from the bar, a regular there, said he’d show me what those ancient snacks were good for if I bought a pack of them.
I bought a pack and we proceeded outside to the bridge in front of the bar where this fella promptly put a minnow on a hook and dropped his line in the river. I asked what he was expecting to catch, trout? Nope, he replied, with a perfect back water hick accent, “we gonna catch us some ‘AELS’.
I wasn’t quite sure what that meant until a couple of minutes later he pulled up an eel about 4 feet long.
He caught a few more of those 4’ eels before we went back in for another beer.
That’s about all I know about salted minnows. Hope it helps.
I can see that, Cool! So did you make your own? I use to fish Lake Milford and Tuttlle creek lake KS. In my Army days. Back in the 70s It was great fishing back then. The gar was bad at Tuttile creek. Great Walleye fishing.

Go some good info on this site
Yes I made them myself
I had sea salt so I took dead and live minnows, put the Minnows in a freezer zip lock bag
Dumped the salt in the bag Shook it up and put in the freezer
Used them a couple of days later and they held their color and were not mushy
The problem I was having that I bought the minnows and 30 minutes later on the water they were already dying
Doesn’t seem like much but $8.00 to $10.00 once or twice a week adds up
I mostly fish Clinton, Perry and sometimes Wolf Creek/Coffey Co. lakes
