Garter or ribbon snake. Used to catch them when we were young and sell to the pet stores for 50 cents each. Baby green back turtles got us 25 cents each.

Nice sized garter snake.
Very nice predator on small rodents and crickets.
Just admire it and let it be.

Yep ! Harmless, but will leave a stink on your hands ! For the record; other than coral snakes, just about any venomous snake
in the U.S./North America is a member of the viper family, with the distinctively large, triangular-shaped head ! If the head is slender and mostly oval-shaped and doesn't have the distinctive
black/red/yellow bands of a
coral snake, you're probably
safe !
The scarlet king snake has a similar color pattern, so to be
safe, it's best to memorize one
of several rhymes having to do with the difference between
them;
'Red touches black - venom lack/Red touches yellow - kill a fellow' !

Common garter snake. Great pets. Feed mostly on insects and worms with an occasional frog.

I've caught quite a few garter and gopher snakes, and took them home to turn loose around the place. My Wife wasn't too thrilled, but the mice, voles and gophers were under control!
