Monster fish jumping all around me, no takers
Was at Lake Skinner yesterday and saw at least 50+ fish in the 5-12lb range jumping all around me. Threw everything I own at them for almost two hours with no takers. One fish jumped about 10 ft from the boat and I think he smiled at me. Was a least 10 lbs. Oh well, it was an awesome show.
OldBassGuy: What were these monster fish? Did you recognize any of them. Bass, Trout, Alligator Gars? Or were they unrecognizable? Just Sayin...RJS
Well, Hoss, I would have reached over and put an X on the side of my boat. That way, I would know exactly where these jumping bass were, so when I came back I would be able to find them.
Seriously, did you try several top water baits? Like a frog? or a top water with a propeller, and if you did have such a lure, did you try walking the dog? I personally don't know why or what was making them jump and act in such a manner. But one thing for sure, you know there are a lot of big rascals there, so go back and figure out what it takes to entice them to bite. Just Sayin...RJS
The most obvious answer that I can think of is that the Bass were going for baitfish of some sort. Did you try figuring out what they were chasing? If so, you probably need to match the color of the bait fish and mimic where they are in the water column to entice those Bass. Try a crankbait or swimbait that looks like the baitfish they were chasing.
Know exactly where they are on the lake and will be back for another shot. Was directly across the bay from where I caught one of my two PB's earlier this year. Yep this lake holds some trophy fish, and is only 7 minutes from the house.
Tried every top water bait I own. Didn't have a frog with me or would have tried that.
Thx gr8. Pretty sure they were chasing shad. Tried cranks, including lipless. Tried swimbaits. All in matching colors and others. Also tried chatterbaits, spinners, rubber shads (different colors), drop shots, senkos, and a few others.
Not sure what you mean as far as "water column", please explain
Means about the depth the fish are holding at
I swear that same fish jumped by me? He flipped me off with both front flippers!

OBG, you probably did but try an unweighted white Fluke type soft plastic. If you work them quickly, they stay on the surface. If they are feeding on shad near the surface, that should work. That scenario is more heartbreaking than not being able to find them. I feel for you buddy, Good Luck in the next round!
Aye laddy, did try a couple of different types of flukes. Even tried on a ned-rig. Once I find the right one, going to nail a new PB before year's end. You think that is a little to greedy?
Thanks Ronnie,
Gotta believe it was just below the surface. Most were coming all the way out of the water.

That's probably because they come up underneath them and attack at high speed, why they come out of the water. Same as when great whites target seals, when they hit them they breach
Was throwing a lipless crankbait at various depths trying to find them.

Not at all, if you know they are there. Go for it! And GOOD LUCK in the quest.
