Loretta: It aint easy! If you were lucky and got into fish your first trip or two, that's double lucky. I am not a crappie fisherman, but in Texas people that I know and who are dedicated crappie fishermen will even before they even start fishing, will put a Christmas Tree in a good spot with an anchor. This provides cover and then they will bait that area, to attract and keep fish in the same area. They usually fish at night with a boat and return on a regular basis.

Now, as a bank fisherman, you aren't fixed up with that, so you will have to find some adequate cover for Crappie. Just Sayin...RJS
