slow day fishing outside the Dana Point harbor

We started off with overcast skies. Fished outside the Dana Point Harbor about 1.75 miles west. Caught some mackerel, and then drifted on of them on the bottom and caught this shark. Great shark tacos last night!
The rest of the day was quite slow. But, then the sun came out on the way back to the Harbor and it was beautiful.

AmericaMan: Great photo, and I am happy to see you've got a flag up so others can see you. I would want a red blinker flashing, my self. Just Sayin...RJS

Thanks for the tip. I do carry a loud whistle, wear the pheasant hunting hat and keep my head on a swivel! I may go to the blinking light, too.

Was fishing on a spot one morning, anchored and had running lights on. All quiet then heard a boat heading my way, was inline with the middle of my boat, stood up and was waving and yelling, about 50 yards from me he realised I was in front of him. Some people shouldn't be allowed to own a boat.

I'll bet if that shark would have been a 10' bull shark you would have wanted a bigger boat.

Use to go out of Dana Point a lot when I had my other boat. Found the best fishing to be south of there. Down around Cotton's Pt. by Nixon's old summer white house. Also some major kelp beds down that way. Good Luck

America, please tell me about the blue wrapping on your rods. What’s the purpose?

I believe those are rod buoys, floats in case a rod is dropped over the side. BPS sells them, or you can make your own.

Makes sense. Obviously I’m not kayaker. Thanks Fred

Me either, but I know people who use them on regular boats. Whenever very young children are involved, stuff can happen. It's much easier to snag it with a boathook, than dive to the bottom of the lake.

You guys are correct! In addition to a tether that is sometimes used to keep the rods from disappearing into the drink, I bought one of those pool-noodles and cut it up and taped it onto the poles so that they float when dropped into the water.

Great idea. I could have used one when wading in the surf. Got knocked down by a larger wave. Took me a while but I found the rod/reel. Lost my filet knife.
