I’m using a 15lb braid on a rod with a size 6 tip guide. It seems I can’t tie any sort of leader knot without it getting stuck in the top guild or giving me a bad cast. I usually use 30lb fluorocarbon leader, but it just seems any knot gets stuck. I don’t want to waste anymore money, so would y’all suggest a 20 or 25 lb leader, and how long? I just don’t want anything that affects my casting distance or technique.

I'd say shorten up your leader a bit so it won't go through your guides or try an FG or PR knot for the braid to leader connection.

How short would you say? Like maybe only a foot long leader?

You should still be able to cast with 2 to 3 ft of leader hanging from the guide.

Gotcha, it just feels a little weird cause I’m so used to casting with a foot of line from the guide. I’ll try it out!

Yeah see what your comfortable with and it helps to release the cast once you feel the line pull/load the rod. More is better so you have some room for lure changes. Try out the FG knot though after a few tries it gets pretty easy to tie and is very slim.

FG and learn how to cast a longer leader is the answer.
Or, you can get spicy and hollow splice a leader.

this is the correct answer.

Not well you won't. And certainly not around trees or other overhangs.

This is not a great solution. Not only are short leaders less effective, they're also more time consuming (you have to retie more often) and more difficult to cast if you're leaving the entire leader outside the rod guides.

Never said anything about a short leader, just a shorter leader. About 3-5 feet is long enough and still castable imo, but to each their own. Obviously it would be best to learn the FG knot like I previously mentioned.

I mean, it'd be castable in the "make lure go far" sense but not castable in the "not having to deal with line tangling with the rod every other cast" sense. I'd sooner just not fish lol.

What are you fishing for? Is the leader for protection or just for reduced visibility?

Reduced visibility, It’s mostly for bass in murky water, so I figured a leader wouldn’t need to be too long

If the water isn't really clear why have a leader at all. Where I fish the clarity is down to 8ft or more and I use braid, no leader, have caught bass and crappie on my lures
