Hey ya all...lived in Texas while in my 20’s, just never lost the best of Texas..like pulling over when in the car as a funeral was Passing, and you took your hat off, or when a guest left after a good evening together, to say..ya’ll come back, ya hear... Those phrases at not any longer said by me, but the thoughts will never leave me, and I’ll be 80 years young on this September 30th. I miss Texas the most, and I’ve lived in, or had offices in over 30 states.
I love fishing, and just came across this site tonight...live in upstate, in a small town called Glenville which is north of the Capitol about 10 miles - Albany, NY.
Have a 2009 Fisher 186 hawk, with a merc 115 HP optimal...outfitted for all kinds of fishing. Two trolling motors and three wet wells.
Well, this year, I’ve docked on the Hudson River, about 11 miles downriver from Albany NY, in a town called Coeymans NY....shy you might ask - well here it is in a but shell....
Stripers...they run from April to June, and I docked to late for that, but.....i understand if one knows the river (I don’t) there is a second season in the fall...September through November...not as active as Spring, but never the less active for those that know where to go.
Well, my 80th is coming up, and my two boys would like to fish for stripers with me, as....it may be.....well, you know😂😳 One would need to come in from PA, so it will be only for perhaps three days...none of us have ever fished for stripers, but are accomplished fishermen otherwise.
Running long...i apologize!
Here is what I need from you all.....where, when, and with what...i supply the boat, etc. We do not want to charter...this is all about two sons, a father, and the stripers.
I’ll leave the rest to all of ya’ll....Bill Dougherty....Gonefishenbebacksoon....now that’s a long handle, but been saying that for a long time, and most that know me, know I could be back in a week or more....😇

Welcome to the Fishing Stage, Bill. I am from Kansas, so I can’t help any with fishing in New York, but hope you like to laugh, along with fish. Great bunch of guys and gals on here that care and share.
Welcome to the stage gfbbs. Don't know a thing about fishin in New York but I do a little about striper in rivers. They are not at all hard to catch, the trick is finding where they're hanging out. I have found that if you find the big catfish, you will generally find the stripers. Both like deep holes and iike to ambush prey as the current carries it by. Stripers are little bolder and don't like cover nearly as much as catfish. And if you hook into a big striper get ready for a ride - unlike catfish, they don't head for cover. Big cat will wrap you around a tree if he can, striper won't do that, he (more likely she) will run. As far a where, you need some local advice for that and for what bait to use too. We always used anchovies or sardines, fresh if we could get em, frozen if not. And sometimes they'll be hittin top waters - think Zara spook and walking the dog. That'll make your heart beat. Good luck and post some pictures.
Thanks...great advice

Welcome Bill,
You’re in good hands. The only striper experiences I have had have been trolling Alabama or umbrella rigs in GA with chartreuse Mister Twister trailers, so I can’t be of much help, sorry.
Hopefully there will be someone along soon from your area to help out with some advice. If not, try the local bait shop or tackle store. They may be able to tell you what is hitting and what they are eating. Good luck and happy birthday when the time comes. Send some pics of your successes as we live vicariously through those. 😉
