Hello. I am new to the area. I am very familiar with river, marh fishing in the coastal gulf coast from Appilachicola to Texas. I am very under educated and lack any mentorship for trolling offshore around Brunswisk, Ga.I have plenty of numbers for bottom fishing. I prefer trolling.
Is there a reliable web site with months, trolling methods and wht to catch. My off shore experience has always been from Panama City, Fla. to Gulf Shores and Mississippi.
Please advise,
Chuuuck

Every area is a little different, I would check with the local tackle store near the ocean. They normally will hook you up with what works in that area and what you are fishing for. In Maryland you can't go wrong with Green Machine lures they are inexpensive pre rigged and Tuna and Mahi will hit them. I've used them from the Bahamas to Cape Cod

Hello Tunastar,
That is a great idea. I do not know why I did not think of such an easy thing to do. I was in Gulf Shores Alabama) last week and the kings and spanish are tearing them up. We even get some off the house peir on the cove out of the main gulf. They launch to get something or are trying to get away from something. Mullet do this all the time but this is the first time I have seen spanish jump and get stranded on the peir.
Regards,
Chuck

Hello Tunastar,
With a handle like Tunastar you obviously are not a "new-be" to tuna angling. I have only caught many in my MIND. I do not expect to catch a 500-pound behemoth. I just want to catch a keeper to add to my dwindling experiences. Where would I need to trailer my new 22 ' NauticStar CC / 150 HP Yamaha / to catch a keeper tuna for either eating or catch and release. Whatever is advocated for such a beautiful fish with a precarious future. I have plenty of electronics, etc. Catching a tuna is 3/4 down in my bucket list and my bucket list has seemed to stall due to health issues. I have been on chemo for 5 years and will be till it is time. No big deal. It is what it is. I have a good window to hurry up and do it. God has blessed me, and I pray to be able to serve God and man while I can. Time is of the essence. What would be the approximate lat and lons / Nav positions / to get far enough out to catch at least one? So several questions...Are the seas and weather just too uncertain to not give me more than 1 day to fish...Is my boat worthy of the trip ie., Could I attempt it with my size boat / new 22' NauticStar / 150 HP...When is the best time of year...Is the catch rate for 1 week worth pursuing...What weather patterns are the most desirable...How far out etc. ?. I may take a son in law, but I will probably be alone...I am not interested in hiring a guide. I have great respect for safety even though 30 years ago I used to fish the gas rigs from Dauphin Island Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico, in a flat bottom, 18'/9' beam custom built aluminum boat powered by a 10HP Johnson motor / with an extended foot so the prop would touch the water. I only went out with swells only and no white water / with light to no wind / and all would be ok. When my sideboards were too close to the water line, I would leave with a boat load of trout, grouper and snapper, and sell the fish to a local market on Dauphin Island, AL. Quotas and regulations were very liberal then. I only tell you this, so you know I am an old fisherman but NOT an old BOLD fisher man. I have always been very respectful of any water. In my mind I take many trips / especially fishing trips / and I do not "even leave the farm". For the last 5 years I have only imagined the things in my bucket list...and I do have a good imagination, and they are just "things". Things in this stage of my life truly become "things". Worthy to dream about but not my controlling compass guide.
Please advise at your discretion.
Praying for great times for you and yours,
Chuuuck

Ok, first you need 2 people to safely catch a tuna. Big Bluefin are no joke, you will have a better and more fun experience with yellowfins. They are up and down the east coast and off NC an SC you should find them within 30 miles. 25/50 lb yelowfin on lighter tackle is spectacular. You are allowed 3 per angler and you do need a Tuna permit. Trolling or tuna chunking are best methods for the next 2 months. Hit me anytime I'm happy to help. Up here in MD the bite has been a little off, but was red hot before the storm. We runs to either Masseys or the Hot Dog. 25miles and 44 miles

ps just a thought....just imagine drifting along throwing out chunks of butterfish.....feeding out 30 test line on a Baitrunner 4500 reel and feel a tuna pick up the bait. The experience I PROMISE you will blow your mind and give you chills. You'll never fish for anything else again.........

Hello Tunastar,
Thank you so much for the real life info. My best choice for my helper / 1st mate would be my wife. I am going to start searching the internet for the "scientific stuff" since I am, was, an accamenditian in my past 2 life careers. I learned however that folks like you really know what is going on. I really only want to catch the yellow fins. What months are the best? With weekly chemo treatments, etc. I have to make plans. Before traveling up to the NC and SC I will contact you I guess via this web site. You can then give me more heads up about technique, where to launch etc. I will not bother you or be a "butinsky". I just need info from someone familiar with that niche of fishing. If you ever want to fish for speckled trout / red fish / flounder I can put you on some good spots from Appilachicola Florida to Louisiana. Winter weather is great / 60-75 degrees days and plenty of fish. All inside areas/intercoastal and marshes. When I look at generic sites they usually do not give you the inside tricks. As I say, it is not harvesting but fishing. This catch as I said is definitely 3/4 down in my bucket list to do ASAP. Time is of the essence. Hopefully I have not missed this season but if so, it is what it is.
Praying for prime time for you and yours,
Chuuck

My wife and yours are fantastic mates. I have 3 grown daughters and they all caught there first tunas when they were 10 to 11 with no problem. It just easier to gaff them aboard with 2 people. You will need a 6 ft gaff 3" in opening for best results. You cannot net them. They are too powerful. Also your boat has a low gunnall so you have to go thru a safe inlet, do not try oregon inlet!!!!. I have a hard time with a 35 ft boat on that one. Check the local tackle shops in GA, there might be a bite around there. Tunas are around in the mid Atlantic from June thru October/ November. I recommend going for a weekend to the outer banks and sign up for a make up charter the first time. Its about 300/350 a head and most capts and mates will answer all your questions. You can go to either Oregon inlet fishing center, Pirates cove. Or Wanchese. These guys are the best in the business. Weather is not a problem for them unless its a major storm, they will fish in the rain lol. Hatteras also has a fishing center you can check out, look it up online. Also I have no problem with your questions, keep firing away...also if you do do a trip make sure it is a full day offshore!

Hello Tunastar,
I am defaulting to your advice. It makes a lot of sense. This is not like going to the marshes of Al., Ms., or Louisiana. Here we deal with gators, and bugs as the deleterious circumstances. Land and other folks are very nearby. With a heads-up trip we/I can get the particulars somewhat familiar. I will try to do that outing and my solo with my wife during the same trip. Towing my boat is like "towing a boat". Do you think I can do both the 1 guided trip and then my solo trip during the same week?
So...
If all my meds go well then, I will shoot for some time in September to October. I / we will go up for a trip with your recommended charter and the same week depending on the weather go out on our own.
I will give you a call or email via this web site for last minute plans.
This is a big deal for a "good ole boy", from LA / Lower Alabama. I have traveled and worked all over at least 1/2 the world. The new and unknown is always as exciting as the catch.
My email address is newchuck2015@gmail.com. I am currently looking for a condo, etc. ASAP. I am “homeless” since Sunday. Sunday a storm took my roof off and my house had 1 foot of water in it along with the critters on the farm. After surviving 27 feet of water destroying my 1-week old home I built in Biloxi, makes this just a blip. My new boat is in Gulf Shores Alabama so the "important stuff" is OK. After Katrina, a GPS found my property. Google Katrina and Biloxi and you can see what damage really happened to Ms. and Alabama. I have witnessed 2 wars and 3 gorilla wars. The destruction in Biloxi was worse than Managua and any city in Wet Africa. New Orleans had a slow rising flood from a breached levy. It was still bad for those in New Orleans, but our cars were in the trees and I lost 3 boats. Anyway......
Thank you for all your help and kindness, you will probably be responsible for fulfilling this huge action of clearing out this part of my bucket list
Chuuck
