I think a lot of people out there who are intrigued by angling believe that fly fishing is the cat's meow. It isn't easy and folks get frustrated easily. Start with a cane pole. hook and a bobber.

With not many exceptions, I'm sure that's how most of us started out. I know I did.

Absolutely. I started with a 3 piece, telescopic, fiberglass cane pole, perhaps 12’ long from the 50s?. When I got tired of catching the same little perch and sunfish within reach of shore I was upgraded to a Zebco 202. That opened up a whole new world to me. It came with a practice casting plug and I practiced our little backyard.
I'd like to learn how to fly fish. Right now I am proficient with my spinning reel, working on my baitcasters and fly fishing is on my list. I'd love be to be in waders, sight fishing huge trout, sounds like heaven.

We were vacationing where I now live. I was 9 and watching people catching snapper blues non-stop. Found out the gas station sold all you needed for .25 cents. Got on my bike and with a quarter in my pocket garnered from deposit bottles bought a cane pole which came with line, bobber and a snapper hook . Bait was gleaned from older guys who had a seining net. They let us take the little spearing (minnows or shiners).
That is how it began.
USAF Major: You have nailed it. All of us got bitten in some fashion and couldn't quit. From some Mexican kids scavanging line and lures off the rocks when the lake went down, to others, we, most all of us, started with a "lick and promise" and went from there and grew intro it and learned as we went. I went fishing with a fly rod the first time on a farm pond in SE Nebraska. I wasn't getting any bites on my fly, but I heard this sucking sound around the edge of the pond. I went out into the field, caught a grasshopper, and stuck it on a hook. The fight was on! Over the next hour I caught at least a bushel basket of carp --- all on my cheap fly rod and reel! What fun! I didn't learn much that day about casting, but I got a first class lesson on how to handle the line with my hands and not the reel and how to play the fish until its ready to be brought in. Yup. You learn by doing!
