I had just run back to pick up my fishing noodles. My motor was running great Yamaha 40hp. After putting them out in the morning, I ran up the bayou to fish a bit, between not catching a bunch, and the heat, I decided to run a bit futher and cool down at 30+mph. The friend I had with me, has problems getting in and out of the boat, and agrees with me most of the time. Altogether I ran maybe 5 miles. As I was coming back to the dock, it sounded like I hit something. So I went to idle, no problem, gave it some gas, and it felt like I was towing a tree. So I trimmed the motor up, nothing, dropped back down, and gave it some gas, it started it again at about 3mph. So I had about a half a mile to go at that speed. Have you ever have that happen? What might have caused this. I took the plugs out, nothing out of the ordinary.

You could PM Jeremy, he is kinda the go to mechanic on here that seems to know what he's doin.
H.T.F. Hoss, you may have hit something with your prop and sheared your pin in the prop, or if that wasn't the case, some props have an interior system that gives way when they hit something in order not to break off a blade. You might grab the prop and see if it slips. Just Sayin...RJS
Dont think yamaha uses shear pins, check the rubber boot behind prop
Some models were known for that failure
Good luck
Yep, could have spun your prop. Rubber insert that attaches shaft to blade hub. Magic marker a straight line from hub to shaft. Run it on the water and see if the line alters.

That's what it sounds like to me also, a spun prop.

Harris,I think these guys are correct. Pretty sure Yamaha props are like Mercs. They have a rubber hub between the splined insert and the prop body. IF you wacked something,it probably broke free and is slipping.
Not the prop, the motor is not turning up the rpm's. Even in neutral, will not rev up. Someone suggested the noise I heard might be a 'backfire' thru the carb/carbs. As I said, it was running good, but why would it do that? If that is what the noise was.
If its backfiring thru carb, check or replace plugs & possibly plug wires

I plan on doing that today. I worked on many diesel engines in my early years as a mechanic, but gas is different.

Im not a big fan of gas engines either, most of my equipment at work are diesel but we do have a few gassers
Absolutely hate working on em!!
Hope u get it resolved
Me thinks maybe check da prop, if u’en hit sumpthin might show up dere, or take apart and check da tings behind prop. Have fun!
Take your symptoms to iboats.com. Friendly bunch with all the answers.

Sounds like your motor has some sort of safety sensors on it that puts it in a 'slow mode' when it overheats or senses it low on oil. It may be neither problem but might be a bad sensor instead.
