You are walking along a trail and happen upon this scene. And you just happen to have your rod & reel and freshwater tackle box. How would you begin to fish this lake not knowing what's in there?
Hint: Alatoona Lake, Red Top Mountain, NW Ga. Late August, 72 degrees.
Top water lures first, dropping them just this side of the wood snags there. Fish love structure to hide out and ambush from.
Isn't it just begging for a top water strike!

I didn't cheat, I took advantage of the situation and googled Allatoona Lake. It is a big deep lake. Top water is probably a good choice if you didn't have any crawlers.

I'd swim a weightless fluke around the cover
if no strikes I'd clip on a very small weight about 12 inches above the fluke and work close to bottom
if still no strikes I'd slip the weight to the fluke and fish the bottom
if still no strikes I'd light a stick of dynamite(just kiddin)
Step 1 look for some action.
Step 2 if no action, top water is possible depending on the time of day.
Step 3 use your go to lure and bring home dinner.
Step 4 think of the best excuse / lie while you got skunked.

Experience talking there J 1,
First of all....I live near there (like you) and you will never see a temperature of 72 degrees in late August! Outside air or water temp. Second it is the "dead sea"! But the lure of choice for locals is a green pumpkin worm on a "shakey head" jig. Fished reeeeeeal slow! Where do you live Just1? I'm in Towne Lake.
Whoops. More like 82F. Yes, I've only fished it a couple of times. Stripers were feeding on bait pods off of the iron hill trail. Got one small one with a top water Rapala. Such a beautiful lake, and according to the DNR, it's stocked. We live in Willow Creek, the neighborhood behind the giant Uhaul dealer off 92. Where do you like to fish?
The Dead Sea is a good name for it. There are fish in there, they just prefer to stay put. Thanks for all the strategies. I'm on the learning curve for ga fresh water.
Well first is the temp of the water. Fish will go deep if the water is cold. Second, is what are they feeding on, and do you see any hitting the top. To cover more area fast, I use a spinner, chatter, or a diver. If the water is deep, and the fish or on the bottom, a top water will work, very early or very late in the day.

I would pop open a beer, sit on the cooler and just relax and enjoy the beauty of that lake. That is very peacefull looking. Priceless.
