Hey, I was wondering if someone could give me tips for channel catfish fishing in SE MI. The time I will be able to is summer, specifically May and maybe August. Any tips on targeting big ones? I caught a 25 inch one in IA on a green sunfish and it was awesome! Would love to catch a real monster.

Catch cut bait from the same body of water that you’ll be fishing from. Maybe check the fishing reports and choose your timing wisely.

I've always liked using chicken liver or shrimp that's been sat outside in a bag for a couple days. The worse smelling the better.

I use cooked shrimp. Night lights help too.

Ok but, say August, 100+ degrees. Do you fish deep or shallow.
I fish in Monroe back the DTE plant on Front street. This place is well known.
For bait, I always use worms and medium-sized raw shrimp.
There are a lot of (I think they're called) Shags in the channel. They jump and splash all the time, but rarely bite. If you can catch one, they make good cut bait. I typically use a 5oz sinker with 15-25 lb. test line. The further out you can cast, the better your chances at the monsters.
The spot opens on May 15th. It'll likely be very crowded when they first open for the season. I think DTE security opens the gate around 4:30AM. I've had good luck all times of the day. They close at dusk.
Good Luch!
