New set up help

I am using an Abu Garcia Promax baitcaster set up. With Trilene Sensation 8# line. The line keeps snapping just above the reel every 5-10 minutes. What’s going on?!

Yea but I think I got it all out. Walked it out. Think I just kinked the line?

Likely kinked lined and twisted. Also check the line guides, ive had to sand little snaggy bits off mine before.

A good way to check for nicks on your guides is to run a Q-Tip around the guides and any small imperfection that can nick your line will be exposed.

Ill have to try that, thats a good idea!

Ill also add that after sanding, clear coat nail polish or something similar is necessary or else friction can wear your line, especially on the top guide.

Unless you dinged your guides on a rock or something, today's guides are nearly indestructible and should not have nicks on it. If your top guide is damaged, changed the tip. It literally costs a couple bucks and is easy to do. Literally all you need is a tip-top kit found at most tackle shops and a candle or lighter. No amount of sanding or clear coat will suffice especially when you have the fish of a lifetime and you can't afford for the line to break.

Another thought. Since the line is consistently breaking right above the reel, I don't think it has anything to do with your guides, but with your reel. Seems like something in the reel is nicking your line at a consistent distance. I'd examine the reel and and the line closely and see if you can feel/see the nicks in the line. If that's the problem, strip off enough line so the nicks are gone and depending on how deep into your reel it goes, either re-spool or blood knot replacement line onto your existing line. Best way to feel nicks in the line is with your tongue. Looks weird so I suggest you do this in private.

The 8lb. line might be too small for a bait caster. It could be slipping in between the spool and the reel casing. Try 10 or 12 lb to see if it makes a difference. Happened to me before.
