Pick up bed with the heavier back ends of my kayaks towards the cab..I never understood why people leave the heavier back end hanging over the tailgate.

Behind our motor home or explorer on this. I haven’t got around to building cross bars yet for the explorer.

Hope OP doesn't mind me tagging along with his post, but I'll add some more questions that'll hopefully help everyone. OP if you feel like I'm hijacking your thread, let me know and I'll delete this. I was literally researching this when I saw this post, as I'm going to be picking up my first kayak in two days.

How do you transport on top of a vehicle, assuming a standard SUV cross bars? Right side up or upside down? Bow or stern towards the front of the vehicle? Do you pad the roof rack bars? I know to use cam straps and not ratchet style straps. Does the bow and stern need to be tied off to the front and rear of the vehicle? Any concerns about traveling at interstate speeds (~70 mph)?

I have a 4runner with crossbars. I tie it down with ratchet straps right side up. If you put it upside down the seat hits the car. I pad the bars with pool noodles or some old t shirts. I go front to front only because it seems to sit better that way. I do not tie off the front or back, 75mph for 30 min has worked ever time.

I transport mine directly on the cross bars, right side up. I do plan to buy some padding for the bars though. I secure the yak with two cam straps and one ratchet strap in the middle along with a tie down straps for the front and back.

You never did say what your trying to lash it to. I have a pick-up truck and I just put it in the bed stern side forward, and attach a couple of bungies. Haven't lost it yet.

I have "J" racks mounted to my crossbars on my Honda CR-V. I use ratchet straps to strap it in.
If I am using my shortbed truck I have an Easy-load that attaches to the receiver hitch. Put the stern on the Easy-load and swing the bow around ontop of the cab. Use a piece of PVC with pool noodles to protect the roof. My yak is a Sundolphin Journey 12'.

Found a used Jetski trailer. Best $300 bucks I ever spent. Easy off-easy on, no dragging or attaching wheels, and you can load/unload your gear without bending over. Makes it a breeze.

I went to a Rackattack Store and talked to Car Rack Pros before l bought anything. I now have Roof Tracks and Cross Bars on my Compact Car with 2 attachable double Roller Wheels on rear Bar and 2 Bow Cup attachments on the front Bar. Those are shaped like a cupped Hand. Everything has Locks on them so no worries about theft while l'm out fishing. I also have a Double Suction Cup thing that can attach and detach to the back of my Trunk. It has a wide V shaped bar with foam rubber tube rollers on both sides that supports the Bow when l first scoot my Kayak up to get it up to the back Roof Rollers easily. I'm 72 and a one man operation so this works Great for me. I discovered the V shaped Trunk Roller attachment online for about 40 dollars. Go to any Car Rack Shop that has stuff for Kayaks and talk to those people who are in that business first before you buy anything is my advice. I would add a picture but l can't figure out how to do that. Haven't seen anything that says ADD PHOTO anywhere, just the SEND button. Good luck.
