Well, New-fishermen: Since you are fishing with the universal bait for salt water and everything eats shrimp, you are going to have a problem keeping your bait on a hook. Just try not to hook your live shrimp through the heart.

Other than that, some folks hook them though the tail, others though the thorax, but miss the heart. I suggest take more than you think you will need of live shrimp if you can get them, then what you don't use, keep and freeze for your next trip. Both will work. Just sayin...RJS

Good advice RJS. I would add: hook em through the tail with legs facing away. (Many of us break a little of the tail off first) Shrimp always escape prey by propelling backwards, so with this rig when you wind your line, the shrimp appears in a natural backward motion. Work as much of the shrimp onto the hook as you can. The more hook the lesser chance of being robbed. Yep, keep those left over shrimp, but salt em heavily first before freezing, keeps them more firm. Tight lines. S.

Thanks, Steve for the "add salt to the shrimp" before freezing. I didn't know that.

don't peel the shrimp, it will stay on the hook better, and besides fish don't peel before eating.

I've never used live shrimp for whiting. Pinch a piece off about the size of your thumb nail and put it on the hook. You can get 3 to 4 pieces out of one shrimp. Caught these last week.

Your freezer must be full, Gordon.

Freezer is full but I share a lot with the neighbors who are unable to go themselves.

You are a good fellow, Gordon. I'm sure the neighbors love you.
In the right situation, like a harbor channel, I use a sabiki type rig that I make and I will use fish bites and small pieces of shrimp and I have caught as many as 4 of them at a time. I will catch one and leave it out there for a while and the others will come up trying to steal the bait from the one that I have on and then I will catch them. If you are going to the M & G, I will bring the board along that I use to make them and you can copy it. It works great and is simple to make. I got the pattern from a guy in WV. that I met in Gulf Shores, AL. Or, if anyone else is interested, let me know. We care and we share.

Use the eye of squid for whiting fish. I was fishing on a boat and the deck hand told me to place the eye portion of the squid on my hook and, with in 15 minutes I caught 8 fish. Others on the boat was just using pieces of the squid and did not catch any whiting fish!!
As for the shrimp staying on your line - tie a piece of heavy duty dark colored thread on the shrimp.

I'll bring the board along if you want to see it. Maybe you have one already?
