Catching Live Bait

It's always been a sabiki thing for me when trying to find bait. I was watching YouTube and saw a family outing where this little girl made up "chum" for bait right next to the weed line and caught a few dozen or more baitfish. Her Dad threw the castnet and "Voila" Live bait and the Dolphin came next. Saw another method used by "Florida Fishing Couple", again on Youtube and they were using a "Ballyhoop" net. Brooke Crist (Youtube) film maker also used the Ballyhoop and then I was convinced. I got one today at Jr's store in Hialeah and am putting 8-10" of pool noodle midway between the ferrules to keep it from sinking. Most Ballyhoo I see are almost at the surface eating the chum slick. And the best part is the "secret formula" for the chum. Yup, may have to retire my sabiki rods. Will keep you all posted with results.

For 2-300 Dollars, I could make one out of a $20-$40 Pier Net. Just ass a smaller mesh inside it. But that's just me. OK, it won't be hinged or as easy to stow, but a LOT cheaper.

Sounds like a great weekend project. The last cast net I made was in 1968 in Destin Fla for the mullet run. If you can remember then, the nets had a pocket inside not like the nets of today. Was 1 inch and took me a lot of days to get it right. My fingers won't hold up to that task today. Let me know how that works out for you. Sarge
