Baitcaster Help

I wanted to get my first baitcaster and was wondering if I have the right idea. I have a Medium spinning setup with 10lb mono that I’ve used for mostly light Texas rigs. I also have a medium heavy with 16lb mono for everything else, but it’s time to upgrade and maybe use those two for other applications.

So I was thinking of getting a MH around 7ft give or take a few inches. I figure 30lb braid would be a good all around choice for an all purpose type rod? I wanted to try more froggin, swim jigs and spinnerbaits. Most of the places I’d fish wouldn’t be super bad as far as weeds go, but could get a bit thick here and there.

Thanks 🙏🏼

In my experience, I would avoid using braid as a beginner. You can throw some seriously hellacious birds nests into braid that will not come out, and 30 lb braid has a bad habit of cutting itself when you throw a birds nest and sending your lure halfway across the lake. If you’re wanting to throw topwater, it’s 65 lb braid all day. Fluoro sinks and will screw up your topwater action by getting caught in hooks or making your lure sink. That’s why I have a dedicated topwater setup. I would suggest rigging it on all mono because it’s cheap and when you have to hack an entire spool of line off, it doesn’t hurt your wallet as much.

Gotcha, and I’d say likely the heaviest lures that I’d be throwing out there are like 1/2oz, should I go with like 16lb test or so? And also, does mono line color matter that much, I’ve always used a shade of green

Yeah that’s fine. When you start getting super into fishing you’ll start learning the nuances between throwing a Texas rig on 12 vs 14 lb fluoro, but for the average dude just out fishing for fun like myself, pretty much anything will work.
