I went on my first trip as a mate on a charter which was supposed to be no pay, luckily one of the mates slipped me a twenty and thank god he did. I enjoyed the job and would definitely go back, but I couldn’t see myself doing such hard work for a low wage. I know I’ll earn more than $20 but I was just wondering how much I should make for it to be worth my while
OK, most people will tip a mate on a head boat or charter, Unless they are skunked!
They pay a lot for most charters and the Captain "Should" say that the Mates work for tips.
Be plesent, help all you can with the people and they should tip you (I do) even if not catching any fish. Not as much, I admit. LOL Also After catching the fish a lot of people will pay the Mates to Filet the fish for them. Like a second tip. Again it means that people caught fish.

I usually hire guides and charters while on vacation, so I don't have the gear to clean fish. I gladly tip well to have my fish cleaned by someone else LOL!!
NP but you have to catch fish first. LOL

the Captain of the charter should pay the mate 100.00 to125.00 per day, most tips are split with the crew. This is what i was paid back in the 80's and 90's

6 pack charter 15 to 20 % of the trip and the captain paid 75 per trip that was 7 years ago was a mate for over 20 years
On every boat I've ever been on, ALL tips go into a pot and are shared equally by ALL the crew, everyone but the captain. Depending on the size of the charter, that could range anywhere from 120 - 200 dollars on a 6 - pack to $1000 or more for a 2 day trip with 25 - 30 passengers on a 75 - 90 foot boat. Usually depends somewhat on the success of the trip and quality of the food.
I been on several charters and the mate always gets a 15-20% tip, usually all the fishermen who are paying for the service chip in to equal that amount so lets say you are mate on a $1500 charter boat, you should make $225-$300 per trip. Now every time I have been out, the mate works his butt of and we tip him well, even if we don't catch much he still gets tipped. The fishermen just have to understand that some days the fishing is not too good and others its a trip of a lifetime. Good luck with it.

That’s exactly how it is the mate still works his tail off even if the fish are not cooperating you fish as a team captain mate and fisherman all try there best to produce
