Different lbs line

Whats up everyone

So one thing that confuses me a little is the lb test of a line. I always assumed that having a stronger line (15 lb test over 8 lb test) was better. But now I hear that using a lb test for the species you are going for is better. Like using 2-6 lb for trout. Currently, I have 15 lb line on my rod. Would I still feel the vibrations from a smaller fish biting it? Would using 15 lb for any smaller fish species work? Thanks.

I use mono filament, berkley trilene smooth casting, 4lbs with a 2 lb leader for bank, river and stream fishing. And on a boat I use 6lb with 4lb leaders. My PB is a 8lb 4oz brown. Never had any issues.

I have tried braid, it was OK, no gripes. Just sticking with what's always worked for me.

I run 2 rods all the time, one is new testing stuff, the ither is my old tried and true. I love comparing, but don really find many differences that warrant a change outside of baits and lures that is.

My last big change was rods, about 15 years ago maybe more, I fell in love with my Cabellas whuppin sticks. Bass pro sells them too. Theyre amazing. And cheap. Durable AF. I stull have my first one, its my main rod. I have others and try others but the whuppin sticks always call me back.

Nice nice! I plan on buying a rod that is meant for like 4-8 lbs or something like that. The line I have on my rod is 15 pound fluorocarbon or monofilament, I dont remember. But it isn’t braided. Would that work for catching smaller species? Do you think it would be better if I used a leader with 8 pound line for example?

Also, just out of curiosity, what would cause me to not really feel too many vibrations if a fish was biting? For example, I have an ugly stik gx2 which is capable of up to 15 lbs of line. Thats what I have on it. The action is medium so it is kind of bendable. Does the test lbs of line determine the sensitivity or does the action of the rod? Like if I had 6 lb test on a heavy action would I feel it less than compared to a medium action with 15 lb test? My target species is trout and catfish. Thats what my local ponds stock with usually. I feel the 15 lb test will be a lot better for catfish than trout. Eventually I want to get a really nice rod and reel separately. I will buy a smaller one targeted for trout. Like 4-8 lb.

OK. there is Light and Ultra Light Rods. For your Trout, ultra light wouuld be good with 4-6 LB line max. For the catws the 15 LB would be a good starting point with a medium to MH rod. The Ultra light rod and reel for it would be for fun and Trout. Your set up now is good for catfish.

Your line sensitivity is gonna transmit through the rod itself. Smaller line, yeah a bit, but a good graphite rod is your ticket! 95to100% graphite rods by name brand builders.

I use a different setup depending on what I'm fishing for. For trout I use an ultralight with 4 lb. For bass I use a Medium with 10 or 12 lb. For catfish I use a Medium Heavy with 30 lb braid and a 15 to 20 lb mono leader. If you're using only 1 rod for everything I'd go with a 15 lb braid and adjust your leader to the species your fishing for. If you don't want to use braid go for 8 lb mono although that maybe a little light for catfish.
