I learned how to cast a Fly Rod first using yarn. you can do it in the backyard and once you can get the loop working with yarn the fly line is much easier to cast. Don't remember where I read that on line (?), but it works and no hooks hitting you in the back of the neck. 20-40 feet of Yarn. Stole it from the wife. LOL
Is that a pole your purchased or a nice fly rod!!!!??
An 81/2 5wt will not be much good for bass or walleye but a great setup for trout and panfish.
Learn the basics of casting, good casting and line control before beating the water to a froth. Fly Fishing is a lifetime learning experience.
