I would like to take a trip to San Juans or near by at the end of July or first of August for 50 birthday. My question, I would like a beautiful , peaceful place to fish for Salmon. It doesn't sound like a good year. Is it worth the 7 hr drive to get there? And which island or zone should i head?

Sandpoint, welcome to the stage, You may find you'll get more information if you go back to your profile and fill in your location. I don't mean your home address just somewhere close to where you fish.

The more specific you are the better help you will get. Welcome to the forum. Don't be bashful, the only bashful one here is a very young lady! And when you catch pictures are always much appreciated.

Welcome Sandpoint. I am assuming you mean the San Juan islands in Puget Sound off the coast of Washington. I spent a week in those islands in July about 20 years ago. We stayed in a rental cottage on Guemes Island. The couple who owned it were retired from Boeing. I can't remember their name, but we found them through a local realtor. You could probably use AirBnB or VRBO to find places on any of the islands in the San Juan chain. At the time Guemes was sparsely populated and had its own ferry from Anacortes that quit running at 6:00pm during the week and 8:00pm on the weekend. Don't know if that's still the case but the place was really peaceful. There was an artist colony on the island that my wife and sister-in-law enjoyed. I fished from shore with rooster tails with some success but it was slow. The old man that owned the place let me use his small aluminum row boat to get a little offshore out into the sound and gave me some spawn sacks and some sacks that contained small chunks of soaked clam. Wouldn't tell me what he soaked them in, just said it was "secret sauce". Caught salmon on both. Fishing from the boat anchored and drifting the sacks worked better than from shore. Are you taking a boat? We also spent a couple of days at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. It was a neat place also, but more people. Did not fish there as we did not have a boat with us. We had flown to Washington from Indiana. Hope that helps. Have a great time. It's a beautiful part of the country.
