Welcome Brian. We need your location. You can enter it on your profile. That way you may have some FS folks near you for input.

Btw, this group has knuckleheads and great fishing advice.

Gordon, I'm living in South Dakota right now. I'm from California and moved here from Florida. I'm a fly fisherman but also have spent most of my time out on multi day trips fishing for tuna, yellowtail and Dorado. I love saltwater fishing, but I got to tell you.... these wild browns here in South Dakota are equally as fun to catch. They will take you up and down the creeks here and get you hung up on whatever log, tree branch or obstacles they can find. Smoking line off my reel and the current of the water makes them seem two to three times bigger then they are. I love it!

I know for sure Brian that almost no one on the stage has any idea about fishing, fly or otherwise, in South Dakota. So welcome, and I look forward to hearing about your exploits and swappin tales. And we love photos.

Great story, Brian. I love fishing salt for tuna and dolphin also. Fish the Keys for yellow tail. Wife is retiring this year so we are going to try different places that we have never been. Heading out to Lawrence Kansas in May next year for a Meet and Great with a lot of people on this site. Might head your way after words.

Spirit, there are actually 11 from that fine area it just that we don't hear much from them. Must be some good fishing out that way and Brian just may let us know where in S D they are located.

What do you sat Brian?

I like hunting as well, I'm a Archer. I still have to become a leagal resident here. They finally opened the DMV back up due to Covid 19. Nonresident hunting licenses are kinda spendy here. You see hundreds of deer here along with tons of wild turkeys. Both come down from the Black Hills into Rapid City. A couple deer have been coming by my house in the mornings. When I use to live in Big Bear Lake, California I would be lucky to even see one deer.

I can see by your post that you probably live in Rapid City or one of the other Black Hill cities. I too live SD in the south central part of the state. No trout fishing here but, there is Walleye, Cats, Bass, and pike. The hunting can is great. We have it all Turkey, Deer, Pheasant, Sharptail, Prairie Chickens, Prairie Dogs, Huns, Rabbits and Jackalopes. Enjoy the day.

Sorry to upset your cart 27 but I have fished South Dakota for several years. I must admit that my fishing was
limited to the Rosebud Reservation but the fishing was fantastic. From about 1995 to 2005 a group of us
Okies went to SD to target practice on the prairie dogs on the rosebud reservation which is one of the Sioux reservations. I can't begin to tell how many prairie dogs we saw daily. Mister Twister would accuse me of stretching the facts. We camped on the res at a campground called Ghost Hawk. There was a lake there of about 12 acres. We caught our supper of crappie & redear there every afternoon. About dark the trout were jumping like crazy near the dam. No Oakie in his right mind would trade a crappie for a trout so we never tried to catch one. The reservation had several lakes & we were given a map that showed their locations. On the back of the map was a list of fish stocked in each lake. We did go to a lake near He Dog School & catch some walleye & redear. Some of the largest redear I have ever caught. Great place, south dakota. Oh yes, not one single day went by that we didn't encounter rattlesnakes.

You don't see the dear in California since mountain lions are protected and your can't run bear with dogs to keep them under control. And now with the introduction of wolves more and more game will be gone. The liberals have gone nuts!!!
