Just moved to the area and have been fishing in Iowa for quite a while. I have been fishing The Smithville lake and have never caught a fish on the lake here. I have used almost every lure in my arsenal and can not seem to get a bite. I do not know what I am doing wrong just joined this page to see if I can get some more tips to help me out.

Thanks

Stsmith: Hoss, are you fishing from shore, or in a boat? What are you using, live bait, or lures? If you are using live bait, what the fish in that lake normally feed upon, then it's just a matter of time. You will need to spend more time with your line in the water.

If you are fishing from a boat, then I'd target the points, either visible or underwater where creeks enter the lake, and if again in a boat, you might try trolling a zig zag pattern over these points with a medium to deep[ running lure. If there are fish there, you will eventually find them. Then, depending upon where and what you begin catching, you can adjust to the situation. It helps a great deal if you have any sort of sonar, depth electronics to help locate different spots. Be sure to mark them with a "man overboard" marker if that's available. Just Sayin...RJS

Well I have fished from the bank and in a boat and have not got a bite I have been told to use either a spinner bait or a crank bait. I have used just a spinner bait so far I am not the best with the crank baits but need to learn how to fish them better.

But I am going to try and go out today to see if my luck changes

I bought a bait caster reel and have had trouble with it. I keep getting a bird nest in it and cant figure out why. So i decided to put my 15 lb braided line in it and litterally snapped the line twice casting. So I think it is time for a new new reel. I bought my girlfriend a very nice rod and reel and it is a bait caster.
I love hers so I think it is time for a new reel.

Any suggestions?
and should I use braided line? I loke to use it but have never struggled so bad with this reel that I have.
