I'd be just finishing at lakes, I've been using an ugly stick I bought for $40 bucks, but want to get something better, can I have some recommendations, please?

Just get a Phlueger President and save the money for tackle or a better rod.

I was recently going down this path. I decided to buy 3 pfluger presidents and kast king rods. If you’re not casting you’re not catching. Now I have a total of 5 rod and reels I take fishing.

You can get good spinning reels for $100-125. Use the money saved for a better rod. A better rod has more sensitivity and options in power and actions. A Shimano Stradic reel is about 150. A G Loomis E6X rod is a little over 200. This will be a very good set-up that will last years with proper care. St. Croix has more options in rods in the price range. Also, You can go with 70-80 dollar reels and 100 dollars rods and get a couple. You have options to get a very high end rig or a couple very good set-ups.

From Shimano: Stradic ci4 or the Sustain

From Daiwa: Ballistic

As far as rod I highly recommend the Shimano Poison Adrena. The MH might say MH on it but looking at the line and lure ratings and comparing with other brands it's a medium power

The other option would be to get the new Shimano twin power and an expride, you would stretch the reel budget a little($50) and come under budget on the rod by $100

This is a very good time to buy a reel, Shimano is redoing their Ci4+ reels so they are on major discounts at a bunch of places. They are an amazing lightweight reel and are incredible for the sale price. They are selling out fast so it's worth taking a look at them asap.

I recently bought a couple of Kast King rods (7 ft, fast action, spinning) and I can't get over how good they are for the money. I was able to get a deal for about $65 apiece, and love them for worm/creature applications. If you spend $100 each on rod and reel, you can do pretty much anything. Most fishermen are like golfers, they think more expensive gear will make them better, when it is time and effort that make the difference.

All of the Bass Pro stores in Virginia are out of stock and will not let you order them.

I'd say "It ain't the value of the rod & reel that catches fish, it's the guy throwing it"! You can get a good setup for less than $200. Don't get caught up in the hype, it's the steak, not the sizzle! I'm a lousy golfer, don't matter what new driver I buy, I'm still lousy!

The rod is much more important than the reel; spend most of your funds there.

Practice. Casting is 80% technique and 20% equipment.
