Ever use ice rod for fishing small creeks and streams?

I’m wondering how effective using an ice fishing rod would be for trout fishing small creeks etc.

Casting in tighter areas might be easier...?

But not much distance..?

Thoughts?

We used ice rods on the boat last year for throwing spinner baits for pike just for fun, aside for the lack of back bone it was really fun :)

Cool.

Right now I have the ice fishing line still on the reel. It’s 10lb fluoro made for ice fishing. Do you think I should change it for reg fluoro?

I don't think there's much difference between the summer and winter lines, so you should be pretty good.

I caught a 16 inch trout last year at big bear lake as part of who can catch a fish with the smallest rod challenge.

The secret is the reel drag.

I take the line and pull it between both of my hands. You can feel how much give the line has before the breaking point.

Then I set the reel drag to where when I pull on the line from the reel it is less than what it felt like with both hands.

I hope that makes sense. I do this at the beginning of every fishing day. Reel drag is how u catch big fish easily.

I use a dock demon that lives in my trunk occasionally and it’s worked out well. I caught a 15 lb catfish on it one time

I don’t see why it wouldn’t work

I was at a garage sale a few years back and a fellow had a couple ice rods. I mentioned that there isn't any ice fishing around here (S.F. bay area) and he responded that they were "bridge" rods. He explained that in a rural area with a number of small bridges crossing creeks or coves, he would pull over on the middle of the bridge and fish through his autos open window. Never underestimate the ingenuity of a fisherman.

Nice, I wonder if that would counteract the “No fishing from bridge” signs around here? But Mr Warden, I was fishing from my car 😉
