My brother in law gave me this pole and reel probably 30 years ago. It was used at the time and I have never used it.
His health is failing and I’ve thought of having the Rod and reel completely “refurbished “ As a nice keepsake.
Anyone know anything about them? Quality of each or??
Thank you for your input.
Looks like the black - gold model from the 80's
Fished the Susquehanna for carp w one, heavy duty reel & reliable.
Would probably still have mine, but a carp took it☹️
Change the line and enjoy using the rod and reel.
Yeah,
The reel has literally sat for over 30 years. It’s a little stiff and slightly noisy but I’m sure that can be fixed.
The rod is a little rough though.

A little reel grease inside and a gentle cleaning, new line and you may be good to go.
I agree. The reel is like new condition. I’ll definitely have it cleaned and lubed. The rod is missing the first large eyelet and the wrapping is frayed a little.

Rods can be repaired, or replaced. If it has sentimental value, get a quote for the repair and make an educated decision.
That Daiwa reel is fine - take it to a shop and get it professionally cleaned and lubricated. PM me and I can give you the name and number of a guy who works out of his garage and has been good to me, if you want. The rod. I don't know a lot about rods, but I see one on eBay, a Nep-tuna, it's listed for $469. You should probably do a little research. I sure would.

Yeah Rwest, that Black Gold is a fine reel. I've got 2 BG30s that I've had since the '80s and they still work great. Have a pro go through them and you'll be fine. The rod you should talk to an expert about. Good luck
Thank you,
“Spiritof27” gave me contact and I’ve sent him a text.
I think he’ll do a great job.

The reel is not a collector's item, so get it lubed and checked out and have fun fishing with it. The rod however is a Browning Sila-Flex, It was an outstanding fiberglass rod in it's day and there is a collectors market for them, depending on condition.
As previously suggested, do some research.
Cheers🐟
Thank you all for all the information and advice. I’m sending the reel out to be cleaned and lubed and I’m still researching the rod.
I’d love to have the rod “rebuilt” and keep it.

You can certainly have the rod "re-built", which actually involves cleaning up the cork grips and having the guides re-wrapped. This will of course reduce any collector value (based on being in original condition), but enhance the personal value for you. Just make sure you take it to someone experienced in rod building.
Good luck and Cheers🐟
