Rod for sure. The nicest reel don't mean crap if you can't feel bites. Course, that doesn't mean that a junker reel is a good idea. I'd rather have a $150 rod and $100 reel than vice versa.

Opposite for me, but I think it comes down to fishing style. I prefer moving baits, even in the dead of summer, but I bet you prefer jigs, dropshot, and bottom bouncing baits, yeah? Or is it because reel smoothness and quality drag aren't as high of a priority for you? Just trying to get a sense of the reasoning behind people's tackle preferences.

i use poppers and stickbaits during texas summer and australian winter. I also use shore jigs because that might be one of the most effective methods. A good jigging and hardbait rod are important because it is all in the rod to make the lure look alive. I could use a cheap ass saragosa or twinpower but i choose the best which is daiwas saltiga because 100 lb GT's and tuna require a reel like that. your rod and reel should be the same price because it is in the rod to work the lure and to help fight alongside the reel.

of course, but for different applications, and under different financial circumstances (i.e. has never and cannot even imagine dropping 1.5 grand on a reel), people have different priorities. I wade fish 90+% of the time and prefer fishing moving baits, so my setups tend to have much better reels than rods. Of course, I'd probably do better with a more expensive rod as well, but I have to allocate resources according to marginal benefit.

rods help move the bait more. Also what moving baits do you use?

jerkbaits, crankbaits, swimbaits, topwater, etc. I have an obsession with hard body lures. Rod moves the bait, of course, but you don't need that level of sensitivity that comes with high dollar rods. Of course, this is coming from a freshwater, light game background, which is miles away from fishing for 100 lb amberjack. I'm guessing offshore rods are built more for durability and power.

im not a big offshore guy. My dad is though. I like fishing land based. sailfish from land, yellowtail kingfish from land, other pelagics from land. Those rods are designed with castability and power in mind. The PALMS shore gun evolv is a good example. Long rod for casting but is a land based jigging rod so it has to be able to work the jig and get a bite. Serious land based pelagic fishing rods have all of those in mind.

Equal for me. Fortunately I'm not really restricted to any budget. So if I were to buy a Destroyer/NRX/Xtasy, I'd have the same caliber reel. Steez, Metanium, for example.

A carpenter monster hunter costs the exact same as my saltiga expedition. 1000 dollars each. The Zenaq tobizo costs more than my saltiga dogfight at 1100 dollars. I also have to pay shipping so i would say they are equal. If you are asking for the total, reels win. MULTIPLE 1500 dollar orders.

I’ve always been told that a good rod will catch you more fish, a good reel won’t (apart from maybe saving time on backlashes).

Not entirely true, reels affect casting distance, casting rate, and help you fight the fish. Good reels also help improve your retrieve and just make the overall fishing experience so much more enjoyable. On the other hand, fishing a heavy, sluggish rod always pisses me off, so...

I have broken rods, or had people accidentally break my rods, but I have never broken a reel. Usually cap my rods around $150 but will spend $300+ on a reel that I want, because I will probably have it longer than the rod.
