im headed to Montana soon and figured, "when in Rome". so im gonna try fly fishing for the first time. I will definitely check with local shops when I am there, but I wanted to ask people who aren't trying to sell me anything for advice as well. what are some good all around wet flies for a total newcomer to try. any help is appreciated.

Where in Montana

Have you considered a guide?

When? I.e. what part of what month?

helena area, end of June. I don't want to get a guide, just kind of want to get away from everything.

OK. Forgot to ask, do you have a rod, reel, line, and some flies?

First, as a long time flyfisher, I ALWAYS recommend going to the local shop, asking about what's good at the moment, and spending some money on flies. IMO, wet flies this time of year are OK, but dry's terrestrials and nymphs are better.

Dries: PMD, BWO, and Caddis

Nymphs: Besides nymph versions of the above, sowbugs, worms, and midges.

Wets: IMO not the game at the moment. But, I fish 85% Nymphs and 15% dry (if the fish are rising, I stop nymphing)

Good luck.

That's one reason we like to know where people are from. So we can let someone know who to contact if they're goin to be fishin the waters around where another stage member lives. Just Sayin.

Just generically speaking, for Montana waters this time of year, Muddler Minnow, Humpy, Hopper Patterens, Ant Patterns, Beetle Patterns, Bitch Creek Special. Spinners: Mepps, Panther Martins and Rooster Tails. Depends on whether you are fishing rivers, creeks or lakes and if I remember right, just like most everywhere else this time of year, early mornings and late afternoons will prolly be most productive!!
