I have no contacts that fish and im getting into fishing and plan to fish small lakes and rivers to catch whatever bites.

I've been told to get a 'coarse' rod and reel, then i started to notice that people tend to use frozen meat chunks and maggots n stuff. I'm wanting to use artificial lures for convenience.

Is it advisable to use artificial lure with a coarse setup? this might be a dumb question but i know absolutely nothing.

any help appreciated.

You can go to your local bait shop or tackle shop and they could give you some advice and help you get set up to start with. By course I assume you mean a medium to medium heavy rod which would be fine for most any fishing. If you have never casted before you may want to try a spincast reel like a zebco 33. Normally you can get a zebco 33 combo pretty reasonable and they are great for just starting out.

I've fished before so i know how to cast, i just needed to know whether it's advisable to use artificial lures with a coarse setup when everyone seems to use live bait with it.

Really it’s what the fish in your area are doing and attracted to. Artificial baits work great for mimicking natural food to them, chunks, maggots and worms lure the fish with taste and smell. Half the fun of fishing is being patient and figuring out what bites what bait in your lakes, ponds and rivers. Good luck!

thanks man! i live in scotland and the spots i have in mind are thus either near or on farms, so everything smells like cow shit. going by that i'll try some small artificial lures.

The rod and reel you listed should be fine to use with lures. Just keep in mind different lures weigh differently so they will not all cast the same.

I second getting a medium pole but with a spinning reel as long as the area you're fishing in is stillwater. If you're fishing in moving creeks and rivers, then you'll want to invest in some fly fishing gear.

If it helps any, I currently use a Daiwa BG 4000 spinning reel with a 30 pound braided test (this is equal to 8 pound mono) on a Shakespeare Ugly Stik and I've had zero problems.

Edit: I forgot to answer second part of your question, As far as artificial lures go, I don't use them with my spincast set up, I tend to have little luck with artificial lures, but it could just be me. However, when I'm fly fishing, I'll use artificial flies and have no problems catching fish.

Skip the Shakespeare, theyre not bad, but you can get an Abu Garcia spinning reel for about $40 and its worth it.
